Nim Chimpsky: the chimp they tried to turn into a human
Guardian UK ^ | 07/24/011 | Gemma Kappala-Ramsamy

In the early 70s, a primate named Nim Chimpsky was the subject of an experiment whose purpose was to learn whether language is innate. Now, his strange life has been turned into a documentary by Man on Wire director James Marsh.

Whether he's zooming past in a pushchair, perched on a lavatory seat or getting a little too intimate with a passing cat, it's impossible not to be charmed by Nim the chimpanzee. Nim Chimpsky, to give him his full title, was born at the Institute for Primate Studies in Norman, Oklahoma, in the early 70s. Highly intelligent, he was chosen to be the subject of a language experiment at Columbia University, called Project Nim, that aimed to discover whether or not chimpanzees could use grammar to create sentences

I know in a way that can never be erased that God’s justice and mercy - which are not different things - will always triumphantly prevail.

His unconditional love for us is the most important thing in existence.

I understand your post, I think.

I can’t stand killing things for the sake of killing them.

Take bees for instance. They don’t bother me and there are hundreds in the garden every day. There is a large group of bee hives about 1/2 mile from the house.

They are for the growers but the bees ignore the territory.

So I am outside last week and a friend is spraying the garden with Bee and Wasp poison. I started yelling “What the Hell are doing?!”.

She didn’t want bees around for her party and thought someone might get stung.

I told her she was crazy. Bee’s know they only have one life and their supreme job is protect the hive. Unless they are agitated they aren’t going to sting and even then it’s only going to be one loose nut ball bee who deserves to die.

I asked her stop and I started flapping my hands through the flowers and all the bees.

I said “See, Nothing. They aren’t going to sting you”.

She just kept spraying.

Dang that made me mad.

I pick them little guys up when they get lost in the house and put em outside so they can find their way home.

My yard is about 40 % clover. My neighbors have nearly no clover. I let my yard grow through a clover bloom cycle ... and one of my neighbors chides me for not cutting my grass rfegularly. I tried to explain the bloom cycle of clover, but she could care less. Tennessee lost an approximate $700,000 million in revenue in 2008 due to bee decline in pollinations.

I never saw sweet clover (that’s the tall yellow stuff) till July 2009 , when I was driving through SD’s Badlands. This was the 4th of July weekend , it was hot, but we turned off the A/C just so we could smell it . It was lovely. I now have a little patch of it cultivated in my back yard-it’s nice, but it’s nowhere near as impressive and overpowering as the miles and miles of yellow clover that day in SD. I suppose your clover is probably the white-y pink stuff we have here in MO...eh, maybe my sweet clover is helping the bees too.

It hurts my old heart as well; I cannot read anything about cruelty to animals (or children, or the elderly or infirm), it’s like ripping out my own heart.

You and me both. :-( Especially Small Cute Dogs, as I have chihuahuas and dachshunds. And now that I was fool enough to get a cat, I've doubled my likeliness to be personally upset by reading about animal cruelty cases-and there's just so many of them, and so little one person can do to help. :-(

Your cow story reminds me of this true story of Nickel, an amazing bison calf who imprinted at birth with dogs (his mother died giving birth) so the rancher at the refuge raised him with their dogs. A sad, sad story — he was never accepted among his fellow bison and too big and active to stay with humans.

nickelbuffalo.com

Yellowstone refused to carry the book because it portrayed so much interaction between humans and bison. But Nickel was a local hero in Denver. When he died, the Rocky Mountain news printed his obituary, which skyrocketed the sales of my friend’s book. A bookstore in Evergreen said it actually outsold Harry Potter the first year!
