I actually had a liberal offer the case to me that 100% of my income technically belonged to the government since it was the government that provided me an environment to earn money. So yes, every dollar of my income that the government allows me to have is considered government spending.

They're not fighting to control the budget. They're scrambling for a way to maintain business as usual that provides them with sufficient political cover.

A few takeouts from the speech transcript to make the "BROKEN DRUM" point, that is a theory that Obama's psyche split (broke the drum) into MPD sometime in childhood in order to protect the core (not be beat).

• "The American people may have voted for divided government, but they didn’t vote for a dysfunctional government"

  Translation: "My personality divided in a way beyond my control, but I found that it did not have to leave me dysfunctional."

• "So I’m asking you all to make your voice heard."

  Here, an integrative commander or negotiator sub-personality is asking all the others within him to ascent to the next instruction which follows.

• "If you want a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, let your Member of Congress know. If you believe we can solve this problem through compromise, send that message.

  While the differentiated personalities aren't whole -- they are like members -- they still recognize a core "we". In order to be functional, the MPD sufferer strives for some sort of internal balance between the major competitive sub-personalities.

• "America, after all, has always been a grand experiment in compromise."

  Here "America" means himself. Obama and all his internal personalities. The more powerful ones of them force the others into compliance and that's what he knows as compromise.

  Note that he sees himself as "experimental". Interesting -- that's a form of internal honesty that has probably helped him succeed in making a tortured sufferer of MPD a high functioning individual.

• "As a democracy made up of every race and religion, where every belief and point of view is welcomed,"

  Obama! That's a concise an potent description of his childhood, raised by his Mom and exposed to constant change, always hoping for balance and nurturing.

That's enough. Of course more could be done along the same lines, and a even few other similar analytical decompositions of his speech.
