Can I ask a question..my Mom gets social security every month(She has been getting it ever since my Dad died in 1998) she wants to know if the GOP wants to cut social security..that is what is most important to her. I keep on trying to explain to her that is just fear tactics from the Democrats but she wants to know why Boehner did not mention it. Can you explain to me exactly what they want to cut so I can tell her. I hate the fear mongering from Obama and his minions, its all a tactic to scare people

Im guessing Boehner was given 5 minutes to respond, and he wanted to present the most bang for the buck. Your mother will get her SS checks...as always... They are not looking to cut any of the current recipients, they are looking at “reform” for those that reach SS age in the future (bout 15 years or so from now if I recall correctly)

There is more than 2 trillion dollars in the social security trust fund. It is money that has already been borrowed and exists in treasury bonds. The Social Security checks must go out because the money is there and can't be used for anything else.

Obama is just blowing smoke out of his ass if claims that social security checks will stop if he doesn't get his way.

They cannot and will not cut her social security......but within the social security program is what I call “gravey”...for the elites...that means the ‘golden parachutes’ where they are collecting when they really don’t need to do so, and these might be adjusted depending on what their revenues are otherwise.

Those people have top of the line coverage on everything....rather like the Politicians in congress who are exempt from everything...and have their cushions well padded.

" Can I ask a question..my Mom gets social security every month ..."

The understanding is, the US Treasury is still taking in 200 to 210 Billion (with a "B") dollars a month; it's NOW going to be a matter of what Obama and Timmy Tax CheatTM Geitner directs those monies towards ...

Even the most "radical" Social Security overhalls proposed by Republicans would not affect current recipients in the slightest (and, most likely, nobody over about 55). Ironically, the only suggestion that could affect current recipients was proposed by Obama and has to do with adjustments in the Consumer Price Index which would reduce annual Cost of Living Adjustments that SS recipents receive. He proposed the changes starting in 2015 as part of his original "grand bargain" deficit numbers, knowing when the time comes, the congress would never have the courage to do it, so the savings would never materialize. But he could take credit now for deficit reduction that would never occur.

The only changes contemplated for SS affect those who are younger than 55 years of age. If your mother is 55 years or older, there will be no changes to SS.

We need to slowly increase the retirement age for SS - by raising the eligibility age by one MONTH every year over the next 24 years. This minor change will save trillions of dollars and protect SS for another generation.

Boehner will speak up more on SS if BO raises the threat to seniors again. We have plenty of money coming in each month to cover debt service, military expenditures, SS, Medicare, and more.

Obviously Social Security payouts need to be cut. We will not cut hers. We will cut mine. I'm fortunately in a position where I don't need it. We are not going to harm people who depend on Social Security to live.

Thanks for asking this question and, thus, triggering all of the great responses.

I wish Speaker Boehner would've quickly mentioned something about SS. It's what Dims will use to attack us. I've recapped several of the replies you've received and I'm emailing this info out to friends and family.
