Senate kills Boehner debt ceiling plan

The Senate voted to kill a House-approved bill to raise the debt ceiling, leaving the ball in the court of Senate leadership to produce a deficit reduction bill, with just days before the Aug. 2 deadline. The vote was 59-41.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid followed through on his promise to kill the bill, pushed through the House a day late by House Speaker John Boehner. The White House, which has thrown its weight behind a Reid proposal, had promised to veto the bill had it miraculously passed the Senate.

The Senate also killed the Cut, Cap, Balance Act last Friday and has yet to vote on a formal proposal. Having passed two proposals and with little appetite and time to attempt another bill, the House now waits to act on a Senate bill.

“I stuck my neck out a mile to get an agreement with the president of the United States,” Boehner thundered from the floor after the vote. “It’s time for the administration and time for our colleagues across the aisle to put something on the table. Tell us where you are!”

Brad Dayspring, spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, announced via Twitter that the House will vote on Reid’s plan Saturday to show that it is “not capable of passing.” First votes are expected to begin at 1 p.m.

only if CCB is amended to force congress to live under Medicare, 2 week vacations, same for the Pres and the Mooch, make the mulit-millionaire Pres buy their family clothes and pay for campaign stops. And KICK every ILLEGAL off every entitlement, and cut every program in the Pig Book, then I'll start believing them.

From the Pig Book

When Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) released the first Congressional Pig Book in 1991, the group was a lonely voice in the pork-barrel wilderness. There was only modest objection to the 546 projects worth $3.2 billion, and “earmark” was virtually unknown. The one constant since then has been the undisputed reign of the King of Pork, Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.).

After Republicans took over Congress in 1994, pork-barrel projects started to be used as a currency of re-election. Over the following decade, they became a currency of corruption, and the explosion in earmarks to their peak at $29 billion in 2006 helped erase the Republican majority. The 9,129 projects in the 2010 Congressional Pig Book represent a 10.2 percent decline from the 10,160 projects identified in fiscal year 2009, and the $16.5 billion in cost is a 15.5 percent decrease from the $19.6 billion in pork in fiscal year 2009.

Quid pro quo donor palm greasing, they have built into every program.

Can boehner kill the bill just like harry did?

If so, he can just say it’s DOA and refuse to debate it - until Harry allows debate on CCB

While you're spouting off on Boehner and the House leadership, did you bother to notice 23 GOP Senators voted with Dems in favor of "shared sacrifice" (higher taxes)?

No, you didn't notice. You're too busy saying it's all Boehner's fault. Blah, blah. Everyone's a RINO. Blah, blah. It's all a conspiracy. Blah, blah.

This reminds me of the whole episode with Obamocare. Backroom deals and polticial theater. And now more TV news entertainment which looks like they’re doing something.

What’s the difference between a clouture vote and simple majority? Since Reid declined the clouture vote then he knows he doesn’t have the 60 required. That much I get....

Prayer won’t save us on this one. Just as with TARP, the Soros or Wall Street billionaire fix is in! Guys like Boehner don’t work for us. Bob

He gets plenty of “hate” around these parts but let me say this: Paul Ryan is awesome.

The Democrats have Boehner right where they want him...begging for a lousy Democrat proposal.

I think that these six who voted the RIGHT way, for reasons other than the RATS. They did NOT sell us out. I just heard Mike Lee on Hannity. He opposes Boehner’s treacherous bill 100%! Bob

Perhaps you are right but I’m not sure. The House freshman were not the only ones who might have been used, but 22 DID vote No this evening. I prefer to wait to see how things work out in the next week or so before deciding that the freshmen failed. Maybe then I can agree with you but not just yet.

The Dems regard Boehner as a fool, and they are laughing their asses off at his naivete and cowardice. Boehner blinked before the first shot was fired.
