There are still a bunch of people who think Palin owes McCain a favor.....

.....and they don't count for much in my books. Thinking so doesn't MAKE it so and I won't let THEM influence ME!

What is a Palinbot? Do you seriously think that FR Posters who currently support Palin, who is not a declared Candidate BTW, have some sort of Obama Zombie Syndrome and do her bidding without a thought? That seems a bit presumptuous, don't you think? Oh that's right, you're a Palin hater. Tell you what, put that Palin hate energy into defeating Obama and everyone here will be better off.

The thread started out about McCain and is now a thread about those here who think Governor Palin singlehandidly got him reelected. Talk about conspiracy theories.

You say that she couldn't have supported him anymore than she did? Wanna bet? How about blaming J.D Hayworth for being a weak Candidate, or is he completely absolved because mean old Sarah showed up and made a speech?

Nobody here likes McCain, but none of us were picked to be his VP running mate either. Now you say McCain is acting like a jerk because of Sarah Palin? He would have gotten reelected with or without her.

Talk about being a Palinbot, you have given her Omnipotent Powers with your fantasy that she somehow convinced so many people about how wonderful McCain is that he won by a 28% majority. If it was a 1% victory, Palin’s limited support might have had an impact, that's it.

You believe what you want. Your assigning that much influence to Sarah Palin means that if she is elected POTUS, we will have a Balanced Budget, no National Debt, a thriving Energy sector, 3% Unemployment and every other Conservative wish list item fulfilled within her first 100 days in office. Even the so called Palinbots don't believe that LOL.

Yes. John McCain is "flawed" and "terrible". AND a POS. He's ALWAYS been. He did one honorable thing 40 years ago, and has spent the remainder of his life screwing the American people.

I say again, the ONE decent act in his entire miserable life was a fluke, an accident of chance. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day; McCain was right ONCE in 75 years. He was ALWAYS a POS.

The OP got the attribution of "terrible" backwards. McCain was referring to the Democrats.

Mr. McCAIN. As the Senator may know, I came to the floor a couple days ago and made the comment that the Senator from Illinois and I are in agreement.

Point No. 1, we can prioritize--and every economist that I know literally would agree. We can prioritize for a while where we want what remaining money that is left. But the message we send to the world--not just our markets but to the world--that the United States of America is going to default on its debts is a totally unacceptable scenario and beneath a great nation. We are in agreement, No. 1.

Mr. DURBIN. Amen.

Mr. McCAIN. No. 2 is that to insist that any agreement is based on the passage through the Senate of a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution of the United States, as I said before, is not fair to the American people because the terrible obstructionists on the Senator's side of the aisle, the terrible people, their flawed philosophical views about the future of America is not going to allow us to get 20 additional votes from the Senator's side, assuming you get all 47, since it required 67 votes to pass a balanced budget amendment because of the Constitution.

I think it was not only a wrong assessment; I think it is not fair to the American people to say we can pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution through the Senate at this time. Maybe after the Senator is defeated in the next election and we get rid of a lot of--maybe that will happen. But certainly let's not tell the American people that is a possibility because I think it raises their expectations in a way that is not fair to them and, frankly, detracts from what I think is being done as we speak between the leaders, the President, Democratic leaders and Republican leaders, which is in a very short timeframe.

-- he seems to be complaining about being unable to get 20 Democrat votes for the Balance Budge Amendment. --

That's exactly what he is saying, and he is criticizing the GOP for setting up an expectation that a BBA could pass the Senate. Unfair to the people to "promise" them something that can't happen until DEMs stop obstructing it, or are reduce in number so that the DEM obstruction is irrelevant.

I agree with you that he is totally incoherent, and I am beyond angry at his comments, but if that was what he's trying to say, it's not a bad point (he just made it in such a cowardly, back-stabbing way).

The version of the BBA in CCB (e.g. 2/3 majority to raise taxes, capping Fed spending at 18% of GDP) is not only not passable now, it's not passable ever(IMO).

That doesn't just mandate a balanced budget, it mandates conservative republican rule. I just don't ever see any way you get 2/3 of both houses and 3/4 of the states. You will always have enough liberals to block, and enough blue states to not ratify.

On the other hand, I think you can get a straight amendment through, and may have even been able to get it this year w/ the correct strategy. So if you're right, it's a legitimate point by him, but made in a horrific, treacherous way.

Maybe McPain is afraid that Toomey, who has also moved leftward, is competition for TV time on the liberal media.
