In the very first word he uttered from the podium in South Carolina Saturday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry unsheathed one of the greatest assets he possesses in his quest for the presidency: an appealing life story that will allow him to connect with a broad swath of American voters.
The Aggie salute segued nicely into his national self-introduction, accomplished with sentimental recollections of a childhood spent helping his dad, a World War II veteran, grow "dry-land cotton and wheat" on a farm outside Paint Creek, a town so small it doesn't merit a ZIP code. He gave a shout-out to Troop 48, where he earned his Eagle Scout Award, and his mom, who sewed the clothes he packed for Texas A&M.
Why does this simple, hard-scrabble — but idyllic — childhood matter? "Hard work, faith and thrift." Ticking off the list of life values Perry carried with him from that West Texas farm, he invoked nostalgia with an implied promise that he could return the country to pre-Technicolor simplicity. "Thrift" - it's not a word we hear bandied around a lot these days.
Soon, legions of reporters will descend upon Paint Creek, but if they are looking for scandal - or even exaggeration - they will be disappointed. Perry's parents - Ray and Amelia - are the genuine article. She really did sew his boxers.
....Invoking the Reaganesque themes of job creation and optimism, Perry left little doubt which president he'd like most to resemble - though a fleeting Bushism escaped his lips when he reflected on the "sacrificial" Navy SEALS who died in Afghanistan last week.
Consider this concept: "All of us need to be reminded that the federal government did not create the states; the states created the federal government."

Rick Perry isn't perfect. He could be much better on illegal immigration. But who do the anti-Perry people have who can actually beat Obama? Nor just run against Obama but beat him? And beating Bammy means raising big big big money. I only see two candidates who can raise that money, not just get votes in primaries. Mitt Romney and Rick Perry. People here can rave about their idiological favorites, Herman Cain, Michelle Bachman, Sarah Palin, but none of them can raise the money needed to beat Bammy Boy
Rick Perry can beat Bammy Boy by 15 points and that is all I care about. Getting this semi-Kenyan horror out of the White House and Moochelle too.

I agree. Gardasil is a very troubling word for Perry. Enough so to lose my vote. Mandating all 11 and 12 year old girls to be vaccinated with this drug was the epitome of big government telling people what to do. I just don’t understand the social conservative claims being made for Perry.
I have two 4 word sentences for Perry: “Don’t wear corduroy jackets” and “Please change your mind”......
His speech was great, he hit all the right points... I was particularly happy that he mentioned how exceptional America is. I have been a bit dismissive of him in the past, based on very shallow criteria... but I would now be very pleased to see him sworn in as President.

Well said. I will be voting for Perry if he is the nominee. As a Texan, there are ‘things’ about which I have disagreed with Perry. But they sure don’t reach the disaster level of the things about which I disagree with the O and his cult.
I am not convinced that Perry is more conservative than Romney. Romney governed to the right in a leftwing State. Perry governs to the left in a rightwing State. You can’t control the political views of your constituents, but you can control your own.

“I was born in a log cabin. Man of the people. Faith and Family. I’m strong on Ameican values. Elect me.”
Those kinds of speeches get old pretty fast.
Obama has shown how efficiently a committed ideologue can sure as hell destroy jobs! The EPA has targeted Texas to shut down as much of our energy sector as they can by regulatory fiat.
Just by restraining the federal behemoth Obama has unleashed, a President Perry would "create jobs". Unleashing free market capitalism is what our next president needs to do, and what Perry has tried to facilitate in Texas.
