In an interview with an Iowa radio station on Monday, the Republican presidential contender explained his role as the Gore campaign’s Texas chairman by saying that “this was Al Gore before he invented the Internet and got to be Mr. Global Warming.”

But in fact, global warming was already a significant theme for Gore in 1987 and 1988 — long before his activism led to several books, a Nobel Prize and a part in an Academy Award-winning film. It was also well before the right gave him the "Mr. Ozone" nickname and talk radio heaped endless mockery on the future vice president.

I am going to assume you live somewhere up north and really want to be enlightened.

As a fairly new resident of Texas in 1988, I found Texas to be pretty much run by democrats. The real election was the democrat primary, where the liberal democrat ran against the conservative democrat. (Yes, there were conservative democrats in those days.) Republicans were pretty scarce, especially in east Texas, where Perry grew up. It was in the 80's and early 90's that the conservative republicans (all over the South) defied tradition and became republicans. John Connally, Phil Gramm and Rick Perry were part of that movement. Now Texas is pretty much run by republicans, with the governor, lieutenant governor, both houses of the legislature, two US Senators and most (all?) state-wide elective offices.

I accept Perry's explanation of his party switch as typical of the times. One negative I see for Perry is that he is a career politician. A career politician would strive to serve his party in an important position, for example, as state chairman for presidential candidate Gore. The other two active candidates with executive experience have not spent most of their lives seeking political office--Cain and Romney. Cain is a long-shot, Romney's conservative credentials are suspect.

My ideal candidate is not running. Neither, I suspect, is yours. We must choose from available candidates, and Perry is worthy of consideration.

Al Gore had an ACU(American Conservative Union) Rating of 9 out of 100 in 1988



Cracker Jack, you need to enlighten yourself before you try and convince anyone that Perry is worthy of consideration.

Perry just lied to you and every other conservative in the US with this line of his.

You do have a point. Arkansas is still mainly a Democratic State espically on the State level. Although it is changing now. But, if you wanted to vote for anyone you would vote Democratic cause that was what everyone ran as. Has to do with the “War between the State’s” and the long held dislike for Republician just cause of the name. Things have changed alot. Most of our local elections are entirely Democrats. Plus you can vote in either primary. Alot of people vote in the Democratic primary for that reason STILL.

I never looked but I'm not surprised. With Palin still not running they don't have anything to be positive about.

Most all native born Southerners were Democrats back in the day. It was when the party left them, they left the party — some sooner than others. And most native born Southerners do have some family connection with the War Between the States and switching to GOP wasn’t as easy as some might think. But the old Dem party died long ago and it values along with it.

Al GOre was not “Mr Global Warming” in the 1980s. Look it up. That he happened to be interested in global warming is not the same as being “Mr. Global Warming”.

We (well, some of us anyway) actually lived in the 1980s. Nobody said “Al Gore” when asked about Global Warming in the 1980s.

Perry added that Al Gore did believe in Global Warming, but that he disagreed with Gore on that and a couple of other issues at the time.

If you are going to look for “flatly untrue assertions”, you need to look past the sound bite used in the speech to the full collection of what the candidate has said on an issue or item. A sound bite is never going to be the whole story, and nobody expects it to be unless they are looking for a gotcha moment.

Regarding Perry being Gore's Texas campaign manager in 1988--

DOSSIER: the Secret History of Armand Hammer by Edward Jay Epstein, Carrol & Graf, 1996, will edify.

Julius named his son for the symbol of the Socialist Workers party and was member Number 1 of the Communist Labor Party, called upon his son to take over his role as bagman for the Soviet Union when detained in Sing Sing Prison.

Senators Albert Gore father and son protected Armand Hammer bag man for the Soviet Union.

Before Al Gore was an enviromentalist he was the shield for the Soviet Union's bag man.

That Perry would front for this running dog reflects poorly on the former's judgment.

It is time to clean the stable, not muck it up.
