Pretty irresponsible of FOX to single out Charleston for a storm five days away... and to rule out Florida. Even the hurricane center pointed out that their own average errors for 4- and 5-day forecasts are 200 and 250 miles, respectively.

It’s got to be tough to project how a barge this size is going to turn a corner over a five-day period given the influence of multiple other weather considerations - some of which haven’t even developed yet.

This is why responsible reporting usually includes a phrase such as “All interests on the SE Atlantic seaboard should monitor this situation closely over the next few days.”

Cautious optimism is in order for the Florida Atlantic coast. It would be foolish to ignore any tropical system, much less a major hurricane, as long as your area is within the NHC Cone of Uncertainty.

Recall 2004 and Hurricane Charley. Everyone was expecting Charley to drive up Tampa Bay. Everyone. Boy howdy, Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda had a rude awakening when Charley turned inland there instead of passing them by en route to Tampa Bay. Those folks screamed bloody murder when the Cat. 4 storm caught them with their pants down. NHC pointed out that area was well within the Cone of Uncertainty. Hurricanes are not a tiny dot on a map, and their forecast path is not a straight line down the middle of the cone.

I remember that well... it was almost a “Hey, wait, that’s not fair!”, with dire consequences, and we were all reminded that nature/hurricanes do not follow neat predictable rules.

Thanks for the updates; I’m glad to be following it here!

You are so right. Responsible reporting needs to include that caveat and exhortions for all to be prepared.

Not that I'm aware of. I'll be sticking it out in good ole St Pete Beach.

I know this sounds bad, especially for the folks in FL/GA/SC, but I really hope Irene comes up this way to Tidewater VA. We need a good soaking over northeast NC/southeast VA to put down the Dismal Swamp fire.

I remember the soaking Floyd did here in Wilmington and surrounding areas.I hope Irene just keeps going out to sea!

LOL Wilma was one mean storm. My first really BAD hurricane, and we thought here in Delray Beach we were out of the woods!

I”m making hurricane preps anyway, these folks are wrong often enough, I’d rather be ready and not need it.

I always liked Delray ... the Luna Rosa resturant .. shopping at Boys (I still have ankle scars from old ladies driving those mini shopping carts - and the parking!) and fresh squeezed orange juice from Girls with the pick-it-yourself fields out back

But down here Wilima picked up boats and moved them over Rtnd left them up in the high mangroves on the other side - two huge tidal surges and lots of water spouts coming ashore

.

Yes, Wilma wasn’t as bad here as it was there (because we can get away from the water!) but she really surprised us, who knew she could churn across land and get STRONGER!) It was a baptism by fire or something.
I like Delray, it’s a funky place. And those little old ladies and their carts keep me out of The Boys, which is a shame, but my ankles just won’t take it!
