...

But beyond his warren of personal passages beneath Tripoli is a vast complex of tunnels stretching out under the desert and connecting many of the key towns and cities.

In 1984, concerned about the threat to his regime from an increasingly hostile West, Gaddafi ordered the construction of thousands of miles of what were described as 'irrigation tunnels'.

The project, which cost a staggering £15 billion was titled the Great Man Made River and promised to bring water from the Saharan aquifer in the south of the country to the major cities of Tripoli and Benghazi.

But built from 75 ton sections of reinforced concrete that are laid as deep as 600ft in places, the 13ft tunnels also provide a handy way of avoiding detection and hostile attack.

This is kind of like watching “Whale Wars”. Both sides are a-holes so it’s hard knowing who to root for.

And just like in Whale Wars I root for the side least likely to vote liberal.

I agree; they are both equally craven and depraved. No one fights for the greater good anymore, it is all self interest.

In Whale Wars I haven’t figured out yet why the japs haven’t fired a harpoon through the deck house of the Greeners.

Flood the damned things like Patton did at Frankfurt. Hitler had tunnels under most of the city connecting the Hospital, Gestapo HQ, IG Farben Bldg. Military bases, train station, etc.

The article suggest that great man made river tunnels are empty.

In reality, concrete tunnel transport 2.5M cubic meters (metric tons) of water a day. Think of 2.5m VW Beetles traveling on a one lane road each day 24/7 to get the scale.

I read this article as a preview of coming attractions - NATO criminals intend to blow up this water supply system and kill Libyans by thirst.

Only depraved minds could cheer such savagery.

If NATO do it, it will be the largest war crime in history.

Comparing Gen. Patton with NATO criminals is sick.

Afghanistan had a great irrigation tunnel network too. Had. One of the great cultural losses few know about.
