Texas Gov. Rick Perry is racing upward in terms of national recognition, Gallups most recent polling data shows.
But that chart only tells a small part of the story. What also matters is the intensity with which his supporters back him. Passionate supporters are more likely to donate, volunteer and, eventually, vote for the candidate.
While its still extremely early in Perrys candidacy, his voter intensity has held rock solid even as Perry is introduced to people who didnt know him several weeks ago. His score in the chart below is 22, off only slightly from the previous reading of 23 taken two weeks prior.
Moreover, Perry has an intensity score that is much better than any of his major contenders. (Yes, Herman Cains intensity rating is higher, but he isnt polling well in the key primary states, and hes near the bottom of the pack on name recognition.)
While Rick Santorum, Jon Huntsman, Newt Gingrich and even Ron Paul have seen their intensity scores tank from double digits in April to single digits now, perhaps the most instructive case.....

I am hanging with Perry as in my opinion he is the most likely to appeal nation-wide once he gets known. I think he can withstand the left’s nastiness with real humor and aplomb.
How can they destroy Texas’ economic status? That is golden. So, the man just has to survive the IED’s from the left.
How does it show that?
Palin's name recognition score is nearly 100%. This means everybody loves her!
Why does Guiliani score so high??
As well as the IEDs from those on the Right who have examined his record vs. his rhetoric?
Me too.
Ambassador Bolton, throw your hat in the ring. We need you.
Do you know what the Zogby polls reveal? His polls are commonly the most accurate.
Interesting. Perry is ahead in the polls even though his name recongnition is less than most of the others.
Rudy became a national icon during 9-11 and still benefits from that, IMO.
As much as we all love our Sarah, first she has run. Once she declares IF SHE DECLARES, I believe you will see an energized America even more than we witnessed in 2008.
Until that time, we go with what we’ve got. And I’ll support my governor as well as Sarah. We’ve got to win this with one or the other of them.
I trust them both to get the job done. I just like Sarah because she’s viscious and will slash and burn, regardless. Rick Perry will also get the job done, but with persuasive plodding. I want the job DONE!
9-11 (America's mayor)
This is Perry’s race to lose at this point.
Perry forced gardasil on Texas to take care of the drug maker because he took lots of campaign cash from them , what is he willing to force on America to payoff his 2012 campaign?
Also, this poll is about name recognition and how much people who know of them, LIKE them.
Like LaGuardia. When the news papers went on strike, Fiorella read the funnies over the radio to the kids. He was Mickie Rooney size, with enormous energy and charm. When the plane hit the Empire State Building in 1945, the mayor went inside to help rescue people.
