this storm will struggle to keep strength.

Recon just dropped in the eye; 950 mb, which is LOWER than when it made landfall. And it's going to be offshore in a bit.

I’m staying with friends who don’t have cable so have only seen local news and have missed most of the hype but from what I gather reading this thread- the cables are really over the top for Irene. Are they going nuts?

Did you ever look up the steer from the mid-atlantic, This storm is going to lose the gulf stream now, but get influenced by the jet stream. I don’t see any factor that would allow maintaining or strengthening.

Yeah, there are argumentative jerks on almost every thread (no matter what the subject matter!); I don’t even bother to waste my time responding.

I cracked up when Fox showed a shot of Times Square and Sheppie said that the only people who were out and about were tourists who didn’t know what was going on. :)

The Big Mew just reminded me that not everyone is a cat person. (Who knew!)

I wasn't about to say anything negative about cats - that is an unwritten rule around here that I do try to follow rigorously. But, I'm most pleased with the dog's version. Thanks.

It's actually having its outflow enhanced by the jet stream.

For sure, those 20-45 MPH winds are horrendous. I take it you never went through a real hurricane like an Andrew, Camille or Katrina.

Some of them certainly are...the media is already writing the ‘Obama is a Hero Leader’ script. Take a look at this copy and join with me in gagging myself with a spoon....LOL!

Obama takes charge at hurricane command center

(snip)

WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama on Saturday personally led his government’s response to Hurricane Irene, marshalling top officials and visiting a disaster command center as the storm roared ashore.

LET THE GAGGING BEGIN...LOL!!

The storm has slowed down which is not good. The winds no matter the strength and rain will last longer. Where I am, just east of Philly they are predicting 12 inches of rain. We had an hour of steady rain and flooding already started. The issue will be flooding and surge, especially in the big cities.

Winds on the open ocean are always higher than winds inland. I have left my dock with little wind, hit the bend and open ocean and find that it’s much windier than I showed on my wind gauge and the seas are choppy or rough.

Recon just made a center pass, the pressure has continued to slowly drop.

Recon and NOAA are full of it and that’s all have to say. The satellite pictures and the winds at weather stations, HUNDREDS of them all up and down the Eastern coast speak for themselves.
