So watch the local weather if you are in the path, if not ignore it.

Only once all day have I ever heard any mention of the resident because I have only paid attention to local media.

Sheesh give it a rest.

Reporting in from Essex County, NJ — about 12 miles from NYC.

Rain bands all day, but it must be the calm before the storm as except for a breeze every now and then, it is quite still. My wall of bamboo sometimes just lies there with not a frond moving. Talking about trees, we have a massive white oak overhanging the house. It is a beloved tree and if we ever move, it is going with us. But I’ve been sending positive vibes to it hoping it will stay strong when the winds pick up.

One thing I learned, here on FR, was to put your patio/deck furniture in the pool! We did and it is a perfect way to keep it from blowing all over. The glass top table is now upside down on a mattress cover, so it will be OK, but everything else is submerged! I verified it all on a google search ti. What a great idea!!

This is a “Tree Town USA”, and there is a patch of woods at the back of the yard. However this town has all its power lines in the back yards, not out front. I expect power outages from all the fallen trees, and it will take some work to restore ours. Thank goodness for a generator that will include recharging my B’Berry, so I can keep on-line! It isn’t as tho I’m addicted to FR, of course. I mean I can stop it anytime I want. It’s not a problem. Honest! LOLOL!

Hi there Nutmeg and NautiNurse! Fun Freeping with you both those many times! And NN — thanks for this thread and your wonderful knowledge. Really appreciate it. DH and I took weather forecasting courses years ago, when we sailed. Before computer models, and when we used our sling psychrometer to measure dewpoint and humidity. Fun times!

Stay safe all!

I would depend on state govt. long before the feds with zero in charge. Just ask the folks in Joplin how good a job the feds do.

That's what I thought. And then FR went down for 16 hours.

I’m pretty sure from reports that folks impacted by the already realized surge-impacted areas and coming possible storm surge areas are well aware of the threat. The overwrought coverage on TV and now radio isn’t improving that situation much.

The beaches have already reopened in most of NC. Just watched the local mayor tell PMSNBC.

Shhhh don’t say that. NOAA wants you to believe their numbers, expect 100 with gusts to 125 in the next update. :P

This is an odd storm. I can’t recall a greater disparity between the low central pressure (*still* around 950, despite all the interaction with land) and the not-terribly-impressive wind levels. It’s a CAT 1 storm with CAT 3 pressure

Mhhhmmm, odd isn’t it. But where are you getting the pressure reading from? NOAA. Nuff said.

I’ve heard all day how the media will never live it down if the storm isn’t catastrophic, how no one will believe them next time.

I hope all areas recover as quickly as NC seems to be. But how many people would have lost property or maybe their lives if we didn’t have warning. Hard to predict a constantly changing event but I think they’ve done a good job.

Good question. They obviously put the copy that the WH provided them out a bit too soon...lol

Ugh I had to turn Fox and TWC off last night. Good grief Irene had lost her eye 18 hours before landfall and had downgraded to a one. They are all so hoping this thing would be an epic catastrophe.

Just look at Irene. Then go to Google Images and look at Andrew, or Camille, or even Katrina. Irene looked nothing like them at any point after she left the Bahamas and the Bahamas suffered very minor damage. If a storm doesn’t have a full circle with a clearly defined eye, it’s not going to be a major event. It’s the law of nature.

Yes, I perceived that directly in the statements from Gov Cuomo in NY I heard on the radio and as reported in anither current FR thread, from the Dem Gov of MD. Big push to make Obama look heroic and dog on-top-ish and contrast with the malevolent and false Bush-hating Katrina legend.

I’m sorry dude, I did not “figure it out”. That’s why I asked politely for you to spell it out. Is that a term of endearment you share with your children or your parents?

I will agree that the NJ coastal areas may fare the worst in this because of the time of the high tides and arrival of the storm. Tides have been unusually high the past couple of weeks. Key West has had flooding and so have other areas. I have 2 nieces that live in NJ, about 5 miles from the coast. My sister is in Maryland, on the bay, not the coast. Will get updates from them as the night progresses.
