The Honey Prairie fire has been burning in the Okefenokee swamp here in GA since the end of April.

We were hoping for rain from Irene to put it out. We got about a tenth of an inch here and none over the swamp.

I don’t get it. How do they know how much rain will fall into the ocean?

By the looks of that map, I’ll need to prep two sump pumps for the cellar.

Left Cape Cod on the Bay shore this morning at my husbands request. . . to come home to northern NJ. Seems like it will be even worse here than there.

I never use milk jugs. The new ones they will never seal tight after the seal is broken. Besides possible contamination, if they tip over in your car you, have water all over the place. We use the gallon cranberry juice containers. They are sturdy, clear and seal tight. You may not have access to these in your area.

Reliance makes 7 gallon Aqua-tainers with a spigot and are BPA free. They will cost you less than buying 7 gallons of bottled city water.

If you want to put bleach or any other chemical in your water (like the cities do) that’s up to you. I don’t drink city water unless there is absolutely no other option available.

To your health!

The real mess will come with all of the mature trees that haven’t battled a rain soaked ground and 100mph winds. It’s going to be a nightmare in many neighborhoods along the seaboard.

My son and his fiancee are in Westbury, Long Island - not an evac area. But she is an ER pediatric doctor at Good Samaritan and they are evacuating the hospital. I’m actually more concerned about one of my twin daughters in the Albany area. She has a house-killer tree not far from the back of the house that started to split this spring. I’ve been bugging the heck out of her to get the thing taken down. The rain all by itself could cause it to come crashing through the roof.

I heard someone on FNC say NYC tourists will still find something to do this weekend, but with no subway or buses running, it’s either going to be a lot of walking in the rain or paying for very expensive cabs.

If I were going to drink water from a 1,500 gallon storage tank as you do, I am sure I would want to treat it in some way before drinking. Just not comfortable with the chlorine. There are other options available.

How long do you store this water before use?

You can grill fish on a brown paper bag and not have to clean the grill afterwards. Lay them on the bag with the skin down and when they are done the flesh peels away with your fork. Leave about 1 inch of bag all the way around the fillet and place on the grill.

You can start your campfire with what is left.

"The real mess will come with all of the mature trees that haven’t battled a rain soaked ground and 100mph winds. It’s going to be a nightmare in many neighborhoods along the seaboard."

You're so right. Trees grow really tall in some of these areas. I'm pretty worried about the 100 foot tulip poplars surrounding our house. They're poorly rooted trees, and we've already had a lot of rain here in SE Pennsylvania. We can deal with power outages, but trees falling on the house or cars are a problem, to say nothing of the 6-8 inches of rain in our forecast. We've had trees fall on or near the house during Bertha, Floyd, Isobel, and during nor'easters. This time of year, they're in full leaf so the winds will be brutal on them. The generators and chain saw are ready . . .
