Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.

Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

We have large windows backed up to woods. Not much we can do.

The best thing you can do at this point is to stay away from it during high winds.

It started raining about 5 this morning and as of noon we’ve had 5 inches and the main part of the storm isn’t going to be up to us until about 11 tonight. That’s better than originally forecast when it was supposed to hit at high tide.

My company’s got some offices in the Canadian maritimes, and a late winter storm knocked them for a loop for days this year, so I’m sure they have their eye* on the tail-end of this thing.

No we don't get wind and rain. They're called the Santa Ana winds, they're hot dry desert winds that usually hit in the fall and pack a tremendous punch. If you're in some parts of L.A., you won't be affected, but if your near the mountain canyons, it can be intense. I had most of the roof of my house blown off one year; just like a hurricane. The other problem with them is that often accompany brush fires, and I assure you that a 60-100+ mph firestorm is far worse than rain - it's truly frightening. Anyway, good luck with Irene, I see it's already been downgraded to a Cat 1.

Every governor and government entity on the east coast is either suggesting or mandating evacuation of manufactured homes in flood planes zones.

Our new TEApublican Governor LePage has declared Maine a disaster area. While that is generally true, I doubt the storm will affect us that much.

LOL Saw that earlier on our local forum. Still just a steady rain here, still have power for now. Stocked up on goodies and if power goes out we have a charcoal grill for cooking. Hubby doesn’t work weekends so we have nowhere we need to go.

I have wondered - why don’t people secure the trees near their house, with heavy wire, and deep spikes, when high winds are predicted?

Probably because a big tree would need battleship cable and spikes that go 35 feet deep.

Mid-Susquehanna Valley update:

Sky's brightening a bit and rain has stopped.
Humidity's about 300%, but I don't have to pump/vac humidity !

This thing's not moving very fast.
It's movement on WU's WunderMap makes it look like the prolonged rain/wind won't get to NYC till late this afternoon or evening.

Was typing this an hour ago when our net went kaput !
Back up now, sun's in/out, rain's still stopped and no wind.
All of which is waaay too accomodating, so tonight/tomorrow will prolly suck.
