Re: pressure drop.... honestly, that “landfall” was actually less land than Irene had to deal with in the Bahamas.

"I have wondered - why don’t people secure the trees near their house, with heavy wire, and deep spikes, when high winds are predicted?"

A lot depends on the types of trees that grow well in your soil and weather conditions. Pennsylvania is very wooded, and many of those trees are tall. Most of the trees near our house are about 100 feet tall. When they go, they go, pulling up or crushing anything in their path. That said, we have one of our trees internally cabled. It has a deep vee, so the two sides are cabled together to prevent splitting. The whole tree could still uproot however, or it could drop a large limb. When it dropped a large waterlogged limb on top of my minivan a couple of years ago, I ended up with a new roof, windshield, and a lot of repaired dents and new paint. Every region has its risks and benefits . . . so it goes.

Yes, that is what the Hampton Roads news is saying, although they are still trying to confirm the 3rd.

OH and I just read that Piers Morgan on CNN asked VA Gov. Bob McDonnell if he was concerned about NYC. HUH? Id the man an idiot. This storm is hanging out on the VA coast and he asks the VA Governor about NYC? I’m so glad I don’t have cable.

You heard correctly:

Source of article (and I dunno if we have to excerpt blog posts from newspapers or not, but I did)

The first two deaths from Hurricane Irene, and a potential third, were reported in North Carolina...

A man in Nash County, N.C., was reported killed by a falling tree limb outside his home Saturday morning, local authorities said. On Friday, a man installing plywood on the window of his home in Onslow County, N.C., died of a heart attack, said Ernie Seneca of the North Carolina Emergency Management office in Raleigh.

Meanwhile, authorities in New Hanover County were searching for a third man who either fell or jumped into the Cape Fear River on Friday as the first, outer bands of the storm began to ravage the area. A rescue team was sent out to find the man, but it had to be brought back in due to the rough conditions, according to Michelle Harrell, an emergency operations staff member there."

Yeah ..never one to miss that photo op. He had to show up looking workmanlike, in rolled-up sleeves (just like the little people) .. after his and queenie’s splendiferous $50K mansion rental, planes, choppers, Coast Guard vessels, an escorted boat jaunt for his daughters to Nantucket, and their and queenie’s various decadences.

Such a tool.

At the weather station in Duck, NC: the LOWEST sustained wind speed report - not talking about gusts here - was 40 kts (46 mph) in the past 4 hours.

Update from SE Pennsylvania (Montgomery County). Judging by the Weather Underground map, our drowning is just about to start. So far today it’s been humid, but temps surprisingly pleasant in the upper 70’s. Overcast. Ground is saturated from a wet August, so it may get ugly. We have a backup generator which runs most of the house, so we should have well water, lights, refrigeration, and even A/C, but no stove or oven. Biggest worries are 100 foot tulip poplars and the creek out back. We’ve done what we can to prepare; the rest is out of our control.
