DETROIT About 100 gun owners are expected to openly wear their weapons during a picnic at Detroit's Belle Isle park.
Gun rights proponent Rick Ector says Sunday's event is intended to raise awareness to the legality of carrying handguns openly in Michigan if rules are followed.

“Detroit’s Belle Isle park”
It’s like a lot of Detroit. A dangerous place to go.

It’ll probably be the safest place in Detroit that day.

It’s not the open carry people that are scary, it’s the rest of Detroit that’s packing and not showing.

Belle Isle is indeed in deepest darkest Detroit.
Last year a group open carried at Arts Beats and Eats and received huge publicity. This is either this weekend or the next. Wonder why the change?

Gun owners should be wearing their gear at whatever park, in whatever city, in whatever State, in whatever America. People should be just as comfortable around folks with guns as they've become with the trash spouted by the media and leftists in public.
Tea Party terrorists?, extremists?, "the enemy"? Come on, people get a load of crap via the 1st amendment and it's somehow OK. Well, the 2nd amendment exists too and it's about time it has it's voice. Screw Political Correctness.

Well, the event has happened, and nothing went wrong... Just as the open carriers and Constitutionalists predicted.
A little humor is always appreciated. :-)

If you throw an event like this, always make it a point to mention several things: food, drink, shade, pets, children, and to bring folding chairs.
That is, if it’s a picnic, don’t forget it is a picnic, not just a bunch of people with guns, standing around until their legs get tired and they and their kids and dogs are sunburned and thirsty.

Good advice. The idea is to have fun combined with Constitutional activism.

What about long guns? Long guns are usually discouraged at these events as being counterproductive at this time. The idea is to normalize the carrying of holstered handguns first.
There are some events that welcome long guns, such as the Restore the Constitution rally that took place in Virginia on April 19th, 2010.

I think that at least one .45-70 lever action would help to keep the bears away.

When I went to the Restore the Constitution rally across the Potamac from DC, I carried an SU-16 with a 30 rd magazines.
I think modern sport utility rifles are a good choice for a lot of events.
