SAN ANTONIO - Up to 3,000 Muslims from around the state are expected to converge Sunday on Six Flags Fiesta Texas for "Muslim Family Day" to celebrate the end of Ramadan and spread the post-9/11 message that most Muslims are peaceful and mainstream.
Families from as far as Corpus Christi, Austin and Waco have committed to attending the event, sponsored by local chapters of the Muslim American Society and the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Fiesta Texas will be open to the public that day as scheduled, a spokeswoman said. She stressed that the event is not sponsored by Six Flags.
The two groups are selling discounted tickets and parking passes for an event that aims to give Muslim families a festive way to mark Ramadan's end while sharing their culture and challenging stereotypes as the 10th anniversary of 9/11 nears.
Activities will include Muslim prayers, entertainment, socializing and meals in keeping with the faith's dietary laws.
The public is welcome to buy meal tickets for international cuisine from local Muslim restaurateurs, event planners said.
The interaction with the general public at a popular, high-traffic amusement park will go far in reducing anxieties between Muslims and the larger community, said Sarwat Husain, CAIR's local president.
"It's our community, too, and we are mainstream just like anybody else," she said. "It's also giving a boost to the Muslims for what they have been going through. The 10th anniversary of 9/11 is coming up, and already there is much fear going on. We have to get out of that. It's been 10 years."
The event reflects the gradual acceptance of local Muslims, said the Rev. Paul Ziese, a Lutheran minister active in interfaith work and past board president of the San Antonio Community of Congregations.

I have an uneasy feeling about this and I think is more than just an innocent event.
Absolutely.
They should make them feel right at home.
No women on rides unless they are accompanied by a male relative.
They should make themselves at home. Kill a few infidel families, rape a child, blow up the fun house.
Why didn’t they just invite La Raza on the same day and make it a really GRAND event?
I say let them ride the roller coasters wearing the longest, most fluttery veils they have...
Nudge..... (there is nothing innocent about CAIR)
Muslim prayers, entertainment, socializing and meals in keeping with the faith’s dietary laws
“It’s our community, too, and we are mainstream just like anybody else,”
One of these is not like the other.
Why haven’t they come out en masse in all the months and years since 9-11, to stand with the victims? They’ve had opportunities galore to denounce their Muslim brothers who continued to attack, yet they chose to remain silent behind their “culture.”
Hmm, the chron is not allowing comments on this article
Is this the week before or after “Jewish Family Day”?
Guess free speech is a one-way street.
Stage 1: Start immigrating - move into a country quietly
Stage 2: Begin starting churches: “learning centers” community helps: food etc.
Stage 3: Political activism: demanding rights, denounce derogatory comments/press etc.
Stage 4: Get elected, pass laws favoring rights etc. move toward political majority
Stage 5: Political control, Sharia Law
I have wondered about that over the years.
I just don't trust any of them. Why? Because their religion allows them to lie.
reminds me of that rod serling twilight zone episode
“to serve man”.
They need some Carnival midway games of chance.
Instead of throwing baseballs at wooden milk bottles they could throw stones at little statues of muslim women.
Instead of throwing darts at colorful balloons they could throw knives at balloons with a picture of Daniel Pearl's head.
Instead of shooting a .22 rifle at little metal ducks they could use AK47's to shoot full sized photos of American servicemen.
Instead or throwing baseballs at a dunk-tank bulls eye they could just throw rocks right at a Jew to knock him in the dunk tank.
Instead of shooting a water gun to move little race cars or race horses to win the race, they can use the water gun to move little airplanes to see who knocks over the Twin Towers first.
The whole family can join in - it will be almost like being back home.
Unfortunately there is no Six Flags near here, but those Freepers who live near one are strongly encouraged to don a “Jews for Jesus” t-shirt and attend.
***Why didnt they just invite La Raza on the same day and make it a really GRAND event?***
How about a GAY DAY and MOSLEM DAY together!
After the muzzies are done, the park employees better go over the park with a fine tooth comb to check for loosened bolts, pulled pins, tripwires, strange packages, timers, ect.
