Lou Grant Disses Mary Richards! (Ed Asner down on Mary Tyler Moore for liking Sarah Palin)
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune ^ | Friday, September 9, 2011 | Neal Justin

The great thing about being a living legend is that you can pretty much speak your mind without major repercussions. I was reminded of that Thursday night when I found myself chatting with Ed Asner at a party celebrating the upcoming season at the Fitzgerald Theater. Asner's in town for his one-man performance as Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

By way of saying hello, I asked him what he thought of the announcement earlier in the day that Mary Tyler Moore would be getting a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild.

Asner, 81, hadn't heard the news and, based on his reaction, he didn't really seem to care.

"She's changed," said Asner, who was once president of SAG and received its lifetime achievement award in 2001. "She's a Republican." Asner was now in his "I hate spunk" mode. "Last time I saw her, she said Sarah Palin was a great lady."

He has been quoted as saying he would have loved to give a sensible portrayal of Joe Stalin, telling interviewers that: "I think Joe Stalin was a guy that was hugely misunderstood,"

Just: Wow.

What was said of MTM in the theme song “who can turn the world on with her smile....make it all seem worthwhile...” is sort of true of Palin too.

Anyone with advanced video editing skills, here's your chance.

Cheers!

Ed Assner was always an ugly fat bastard, even when the show was current.

What must he look like now that he’s an old ugly fat bastard?

Speaking of the Dick Van Dyke show, I had no idea that Richard Dysart was gay. I was watching an old episode of Family Feud with Dawson, and Dysart said: “If I had a wife...” So I looked him up on Wikipedia and surprise!

Damn those teenage boy hormones! I was turned on by Elizabeth Mongomery, MTM, Dawn Wells, Maureen McCormick and just about every female on the original Star Trek. Thank God for re-runs in the 70’s.

Not familiar with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, at first I thought it must be a right-leaning news source.

Are you kidding? Around here we call it simply the Red Star or the Star & Sickle.

Cheers!

You must mean

Susan Dey (swoon).

IIRC she was also in L.A. Law.

Cheers!

Ed Asner is a “living legend” now? Oh please. The man is a mediocre actor and a stinkin’ commie.

Cool clip. Didn’t realize Richard Deacon(the bald guy) was so light on his feet.

Going for the cold shower now, brb.

(How can anyone fully clothed be so wholesomely *sultry*?)

Wistful *sigh* for days long past.

Go Sarah! (same kind of sprightly wholesome.)

Cheers!

Not bad. But Meredith Mac Rae/”Billie Jo Bradley” was always my favorite Petticoat Junction gal.

Richard Deacon looks EXACTLY like something that the late Dave Berg (Mad Magazine's "The Lighter Side of...") would have drawn.

Ed Asner’s been a dyed-in-the-wool Commie for a very long time. Hardly surprising that he’d make a statement like that.

And yes, Mary Tyler Moore is right.

Damn. I thought his name was Richard Dysart, not Deacon. Dysart is the LA Law guy IIRC.

Hah, you're right about Dave Berg and Richard Deacon. For the longest time I couldn't figure why he kept drawing this same squinty eyed, big nosed dude. Then I realized he was copying Spiro Agnew. Anyway: agree he loks like a Berg cartoon

You mean Richard Deacon? "Deac" was Mel. Dysart was Leland McKensie on L.A. Law! And Deacon was gay.

And to all the guy posts, just gotta agree, she was a “hottie”. The chicks today have no idea how to capture a guy’s imagination just by dressing that way.

And don’t even get me started on Sophia Loren..........
