PEORIA Ryder has canceled all truck rentals for the coming week due to credible but unconfirmed threats of terrorist attacks in the wake of the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
A customer who did not want to be identified told the Journal Star that she had been informed by Ryder of the cancellation by phone call Friday. A Ryder representative told the Journal Star all local rentals for the weekend had been canceled, though that person declined to elaborate on the reason.
Further questions were referred to the head of rentals for the local arm of the company. That person did not immediately return a request for an interview.
The customer was told by a Ryder representative in Peoria that the president of the company had decided to stop all truck rentals this week in the wake of the threats of terrorist attacks on the East Coast.
U.S. officials said Thursday they were investigating a credible but unconfirmed threat of a car bomb that may be used to target bridges or tunnels in New York City or Washington, D.C.
Neither U-Haul or Budget Truck Rental have any plans at this time to discontinue rentals in the area over the weekend, according to Peoria-area representatives reached by phone Friday afternoon.
Anyone who had moving plans disrupted this weekend who would like to share their story is asked to call the Journal Star newsroom at 686-3114 or email news@pjstar.com.

Today in West Conshohocken, PA - around 1PM, headed towards King of Prussia, I came across a very sketchy Ryder truck driver. You could tell they were not a great driver, but I didn’t think that was strange. It was the *way* they were driving (way too cautious and sketchy). Also, just got a bad vibe. The truck has PA plates, something like 7YL 0077. Everything about this threat has got me sketched out.
Ryder truck + Ramzi Yousef = 1993 WTC bombing
I doubt they feel like they've won anything. They want us to stop supporting Israel, and we won't do that.
Then you would have to be for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Are you?
All conservatives should be.
Something about this story doesn’t pass the smell test.
I try to stay away from EVERY rental truck I see on the road. The majority of people driving them have little or no truck driving experience, they don’t know how to trust their mirrors, they don’t realize how long their vehicle is, etc. etc.
Offer they a bacon cheesebuger and a shot of Jack.
Thanks for the ping, MD. I hadn’t heard about this.
Ryder's best known customer wasn't a muslim - although he had a friend with a muslim friend.
I applaud Ryder for their decision. However, if members of the ROP have decided to use Ryder for its next exploit, that truck has been rented (days ago), full of explosives and well on its way to its destination.
I’m not sure who is more determined to shut down transportation and mobility in this country as we have known it: AQ or the DHS/TSA.
OK- the two things I read tonight say it could be a dirty bomb, and we could have gotten the info from Pakistan, which is not pleased with us, and is therefore not giving us access to the AQ “source” (for lack of a better word). I would take everything with a grain of salt.
That's fine, but the guy on 9/11 lacked the ability to do much of anything about it even if he got over his hangup about profiling.
Not to mention the 1993 WTC bombing.
Ok. But can’t they just use U-haul or something else?
This is stupid and just as dumb as banning guns.
Ditto!
Ban them from planes, too.
Everything about this threat has got me sketched out.
