Rick Perry Loves Stealing Other People's Limelight (The Left tries to use Palin to beat-up Perry)
The Atlantic ^ | September 13, 2011 | Elspeth Reeve

When Rick Perry announced he was running for president the very same day Michele Bachmann won the Ames straw poll in Iowa -- and then proceeded to chat up Republicans in her hometown of Waterloo -- some saw it as a genius move. Others saw it as a dick move. But it looks like Perry has a record of stomping all over everyone else's dress on her big day. In 2008, the Texan literally grabbed Sarah Palin by the arm and yanked her out of the spotlight.

The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan highlights this video from a Republican Governors Association press conference just after the 2008 election. At the time, as John Scotus explains, the event would have offered Palin "first chance to defend herself" apart from the McCain campaign. But the other governors -- seven in attendence are or were at one time 2012 presidential candidates -- didn't want to let Palin soak up all the press.

At the time, Human Events' Jack Thompson explained that though the conference had been billed as Palin-centric, with 20 minutes of questioning for the Alaskan, just two hours before the event began, it was changed to allow just 5 minutes of Palin time....

You are indeed both right.

In addition, the 2008 Republican Governors conference was held in Texas, so Governor Perry was host and in this instance was acting like one.

A pox on Andrew Sullivan.

Human Events' website said that their contributor ran against Janet Reno for State's Atty and took on Ice-T.

I'd sometimes tune into FR just to follow those three-way flame wars he'd get into with Navigator and harrowup.

Truth is not an attack. There is a vast difference. WE the PEOPLE want, need, and should HAVE the truth...and I don’t care WHO you are. I mean that. No matter WHO you are.
Coming on a thread and calling a candidate, or potential candidate, stupid, irrelevant, a liar, or worse, does not help your argument whatsoever, especially when it is merely your opinion not backed up by the facts and simply meant to agitate. By the same token, if facts are presented and you whitewash them, make excuses for them, and are downright dishonest about it, who does THAT help? Most of us aren’t stupid.

There won’t be any endorsements of Rick-the-dick Perry. His day came and went this week. The exposure of his Gardasil Gambit has him falling like a chunk of Kryptonite.

Wow, there's nothing quite like substantive debate! It will be great if Sarah runs, but I just don't think she is going to do it. I just hope that her most ardent fans will be able to support the eventual nominee against Obama.

As for the Gardasil issue, I don't like it either. But I heard today (from Rush) that the measure included an "Opt Out" provision for parents -- something that nobody mentioned last night. Doesn't make it good in my eyes, but not Orwellian, either.

I plan to support the GOP nominee, and will continue to observe Reagan's 11th Commandment until he or she is chosen...

Palin has been attacked by supposed conservatives many on this site for the last three years. Not sure where you have been.

This “opt-out” nonsense is getting ludicrous. Linbaugh is either just ignorant, or trying to cloud what is a clear issue.

There was no reason what-so-ever for his executive order. He was trying to side-step the legislature’s power to ingratiate himself with the powerful and wealthy Pharma political advertising clique.

Whatever happens, he is in their pocket for sure, and that is bad across the board.

This did happen, I saw it at the time. It was a press conference for Sarah Palin that was scheduled before the event. Was supposed to last for 20 minutes, I think. After about 3 questions Perry shut it down because he wasn’t getting any attention. Haley Barbour was there too and I think that is one reason he got his nose out of joint about Sarah. Sarah would step back after she answered each question and did what she could to not steal the show but that was the first chance the press had at her and they weren’t interested in anyone else. Perry grabbed her by the arm to usher her to the mic to answer a question. When she finished her answer, he stepped in front of her and called a halt to the presser.

You know, when I first saw this posted about Perry cutting the press conference short, and I watched the video, I did post to a Perry supporter that it had every appearance of a rotten thing to do on Perry's part. But in the video, Palin indicates ZERO about her own feelings -- one cannot tell whether she's surprised, upset, grateful, annoyed, or anything.

So in all fairness, I wonder: Was this mutually agreed upon between Palin and Perry in advance that day back in '08 for some sensible reason, and it's being used now as a way to wrongly portray Perry? I don't know. I don't know if Palin has ever said a word about it. Not knowing what really went down, it can only be truly said that it looks like Perry snubbed her. But looks can be deceiving.

I hope Palin gets in and wins the whole thing. There are things to like in Cain, Bachmann, Perry, and even Newt ... but there are tons MORE to like in Palin. Romney is bad news on every front.

The opt out provision for this vaccine was not as easy, simple, or timely as perry and his defenders make it seem. Beyond that, the opt out provision would not have been recognized in private or parochial schools which are 15% of the Texas education system. If a parent had a daughter enrolled in either of these optional school systems, they would either be forced to have the vaccine, or be forced to withdraw their child from the school.

Elspeth Reeve is the disgraced former reporter/researcher with The New Republic who lost her job after her role in "fact checking" the fraudulant Iraq war accounts written by her HUSBAND in 2007.

TERRIFIC!
She has to and can use the funds to build up staff and logistical things to launch a campaign which she can’t do when she has already announced.

I don't think it's ludicrous; I think it makes a huge difference. If there was an opt-out provision, then no one was truly compelled to take the vaccine. Sort of like those "mandatory evacuations" we hear about in hurricane zones -- which aren't really mandatory since citizens cannot be forced out of their homes.

And as for your contention that "there was no reason what-so-ever for his executive order," perhaps it was out of concern for the near-epidemic spread of HPV among teenage girls. There are other reasons for doing things besides being in the pocket of "Big _______." (Big Oil, Big Banks, Big Tobacco, Big Pharma, etc.

Then why even have an EO at all? Why not make it optional like the flu vaccine?
