Phil Tetlock and Barbara Mellers were in a race against time to save their 15-year-old daughter, Jenny. As I reported last summer, Jenny developed a degenerative muscle disease nearly two years ago, soon after being vaccinated against the cervical-cancer-causing HPV. She became nearly completely paralyzed, though her mind was perfectly intact and she could still enjoy her pet parakeet, Hannah Montana, and Twilight.
I've been E-mailing Phil regularly over the past year, and up until our last E-mail, one week ago, he had been holding out hope that they would be able to find a cure for his daughter—or to at least determine if the human papillomavirus vaccine called Gardasil had caused his daughter's illness, most likely a juvenile form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (aka Lou Gehrig's disease). Sadly, the clock ran out last Sunday, and Jenny passed away.

I lost my first cousin to it over 10 years ago. I wish she’d of had it available when she was a teenager. Not that I know it was triggered by HPV, but its likely. Most women get it from men who have “played around”.
I also love the folks that say “my daughter doesn’t have sex”. Maybe or maybe not. You don’t really know unless you keep her chained to the house at all times. I did read one comment where the girl was disabled, I guess that is a generally safe bet, but otherwise, you are kidding yourself.
And that guy who may marry your virginal daughter? How do you know he hasn’t “been around the block”?
Keep dreaming. Medical technology has handed us a miracle, you should use it. Your daughter could be the perfect angel and contract it on her wedding night.

From the minute the vaccine was available to the general public it was an opt-in. You could take your kid to the doctor and get them vaccinated. Not a damn thing to stop anyone except that the most at risk girls have the crappiest parent who wouldn't spend the money for the vaccine.
The very idea of a mandated opt-in isn't logical.
What was the requirement for the opt out?
Nobody in Tx was forced to vaccinate their chaste innocent preteen daughters.
