Uh huh, uh huh. Older ones are grandfathered in, but new two strokes have been banned from US highway use since 1986. That’s why the Yammie RZ350 went away.

I had one of those back in the early '70's. It was really fast when it ran but a nut kept falling off the crankshaft end and I could not get it to stay on even with Loctite.

Still remember pushing that POS off road uphill to a kegger in Colorado.

A KX125, for example, isn’t going to do 60 any time soon.

No problem with the right gearing same as my KTM. The KTM has 34 crank hp (DIN) and the KX similar. That's considerably more than is required to overcome wind resistance and frictional drag. Scooters with far less hp routinely go faster.

The day a motorcycle “forces” me off the road is the day I turn in my physics-knowledge card.<<<<

Now I don’t care who you are, that there is funny! And I’m an avid motorcyclist and AMA member with a Yamaha YZF-R1, Honda XR650L, and KTM 300XCW in my stable - got all my bases covered.

Unless your CR500 is older than 86, it’s illegal to drive it on the highway (as in, can’t get registration or plates illegal), and your KTM 125 would have to be a four stroke to be street legal. The poster was talking about two strokes like his old Bultaco.

Unless you are seriously suggesting that a thousand almost-thirty-year-old dirtbikes are assaulting Saint Louis roads, I think we can scratch those off the list.

My ‘taco was capable of about 55, having four widely spaced gears. At that speed I did not attempt to see if it could still pop the front tire. I wanted to live, not end up in a ball of crumpled aluminum.

My ‘taco was a 73 and was grandfathered, at least here in Illinois.

IIRC, the top speed of a KX125 with stock gearing is about 50. So, no.

I wouldn’t go that far. Could be a bunch of Ducati, Aprilia and BMW owners for all you (or we) know. :P

However, we know it’s not Harley riders because the description was not “slow bikes”. :P

Washington State has a new law taking effect Jan 1 allowing dirt bikes to be registered for street use after installation of a dual purpose kit and inspection by the State Patrol. Emissions (2 vs 4st) is irrelevant. I do plan to go forward with this (using the ‘86 CR500). This used to be done all the time but a couple of years ago the state started clamping down. But during the last legislative session the new law was passed and the governor signed it so we are back in business.

How would you see anything? Other than the front rank, all you’d see is massive clouds of two-stroke exhaust! :P

Of course “winning” may mean ending up with the bike in your lap.

Federal law says different - going to be interesting to see who wins that one.
