Friend of mine was serving in the military there in the 60s and said he had to figure a way to a safe place through lava all over the place during an eruption.

The sulphuric acid (and other stuff) in the gasses from the volcano are called “vog” and they are truly vile. Anyone with asthma or other respiratory problems has a hard time.
