Oh joy, I bet the folks on Chicago water loved to hear about that. I don’t know what process Chicago water purification uses to abate mercury.

In nature, mercury likes to lock itself up with sulfur to form the harmless cinnabar, that is, harmless until some human comes along and heats it.

Turns out most of it was encapsultaed in riverbed mud - until the DNR dredged it.
