As Rick Perry Stumbles, Rick Santorum Rises
IBD's Capital Hill ^ | 9/23/2011 | Ed Carson

After three debates, the consensus among conservative commentators is that GOP frontrunner Rick Perry is getting worse, not better. That's good news for Mitt Romney, who has been closing the gap with Perry in recent days. Intrade now sees the ex-Massachusetts governor as the most likely Republican nominee.

But it’s also good for Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator. He now may emerge from the long list of second-tier candidates.

Romney should be an easy target.

I thought Perry would be a great candidate- until I found out about his views on illegal immigration. What a disappointment.

Now you've gone and done it. You went and actually vetted Perry's record. Some folks around here are going to be mighty pissed about that.

“I thought Santorum started looking kind of wild-eyed, crazy and desperate last night, just like Michelle Bachmann did last week and last night.”

He had a high pitched desperate sound to me. I like him, but not for President. The only thing that matters to me is beating Obama. I don’t have a problem with Perry on the issues, but I need to see better debating performance so I can feel sure that he’ll pummel Obama.

I could live with Perry as well, if it were not for the immigration issue. Thats a deal breaker for me.

I suspect for many others as well. When will the GOP get it?

Santorum ain’t going anywhere indeed, but he was the only one who defended a controversial non-pc position.

I hope they keep asking about the amnesty question at every debate so Perry will look more like the lying idiot that everyone discovered that he truly is.

I dunno...I was suspicious of Heartless Rick from the beginning. That bit about in-state tuition for illegal immigrants was the last straw!

I think Herman Cain's the best man for the job.

That was my take on Santorum too — tries too hard, just doesn’t infuse confidence or ooze any leadership or charisma whatsoever. I like his stances for the most part, but he is a bit holier than thou considering his support for Specter demonstrates that anyone with a history has mistakes. Had he any executive experience, that is exactly the kind of judgement that he now uses against those who do have executive experience.

Cain didn’t mention Kookcinich, Ron Paul did.

You're right . . . I stand corrected . . .

I live in Texas and have never been a Perry fan. I have voted for him over and over and will if he is running against Obama... however, I don’t think he is electable. His handlers really need to work on him.

Unfortunately, "sisters," this information has been out and in the public domain for quite some time, but now that you've heard it from the horse's mouth, maybe you and lots of other Perry hopeful, will realize that those of us who tried to tell you how un-conservative Perry is, weren't guilty of anything other than being honest and straight forward.

Some of my dear friends who were/are Perry supporters (I think mostly because of the "Perry buzz" in the so-called conservative media or at least what passes in DC as "conservative")have been mad at me for pointing what is now most obvious - Perry's NO conservative, he's not even very good at explaining his "compassionate conservative" views.

What Perry is, is some moderate/liberal dream candidate to lose the GOP seat for the White House!

Palin = wish she’d commit . . .

Oh, she's committed, alright. She's strategically timing her entry into the race.

As I've said many times, she gains nothing by being involved with the early stages of this primary, which for all intents and purposes, is little more than a demolition derby opening act for the main event.

I saw a strong contrast between Romney and Perry that was seriously to Perry's disadvantage.

Romney knew his points, didn't stray from them, and, best of all, managed to turn his answers to the questions against the Illegal in almost every case. Indeed, he was hard hitting and well organized.

Perry was basically none of those things. Instead he was defensive, jumped without any real organization from point to point without connecting them, and, worst of all, seldom managed to turn his answers into consistent, hard attacks on the Illegal.

Bottom line: Romney would probably be the better candidate, but, most likely, not the better president. All of that leaves me in the State of Quandary, wanting to see more debates, not planning at this time to give money to any of the candidates before we've selected a nominee, not planning to vote early, and definitely planning only to vote on election day.

Hell I think even Ron Paul could beat Obama at this point!

Santorum is at least better than Mick Pomney.

Perry did more than stumble. I believe he cut a hole in his sail, snapped off his rudder, and tossed his emergency prop and oar into the drink.

” I don’t have a problem with Perry on the issues, but I need to see better debating performance so I can feel sure that he’ll pummel Obama.”

The only thing Perry would have to say in a debate with Obumbler is...”I'm willing to run on my record in office, you have no choice but to run on yours”. Then he can just walk off the stage.

I really doubt Obumbler will be willing to debate anyone, so it is a moot point.

I didn’t think the Texan stumbled. I like Santorum a lot, on paper, but he is not verbally feisty enough to take the presidency, I think.

Santorum is a good debater and knows his facts, but his foreign policy is over the top neo-conservative. I actually think Huntsman got the best of the foreign policy debate. We need some kind of balance between 100% isolationist (Ron Paul) and 100% interventionist (most of the field). We definitely put our noses in too many places it shouldn’t be, but we don’t want to telegraph weakness either.

“Cain = can’t believe he’d even mention Kookcinich in any form . . . makes me worry”

????? I thought it was Ron Paul who said he would consider Kookinitch for his cabinet.

Otherwise I agree with you, although you left out Gingrich who is looking better and better.
