Ed Rollins: ‘It’s never too late for Gov. Palin’ to jump into 2012 race
The Hill ^ | 09/26/ | Alicia Cohen

Republican strategist Ed Rollins on Monday downplayed the latest surge in rumors that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will jump into the race for the Republican presidential nomination, and instead argued in favor of another possible candidate.

Christie “ought to stay running New Jersey,” Rollins said on Fox News’ “Kilmeade and Friends” radio show.

“If I were advising him, I would tell him not to think about [a presidential bid],” Rollins said. “I can’t imagine Gov. Christie spending the next four or five months in the winters of Iowa, traipsing to the places he’s got to go in order to be a viable candidate.”

Rollins, who was Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-Minn.) campaign manager until early this month, said the only rumored presidential candidate he believes still viable is former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

“It’s never too late for Gov. Palin,” Rollins said. “She plays by different rules.”

Yes, she said it at the Iowa State Fair. Here's the text.

Palin: There is still a lot of contemplation that goes on within a family, deciding whether to engage in such a life-changing venture, putting yourself forward in the name of service, in such a position as President of the United States. So, we're still thinking about it, and the impact on family.

Family comes first in my life, and I just don't want to adversely affect the family. So, we're still talking about it, thinking about it. And that's what I want supporters to understand.

At the same time, I want to be very fair to supporters and not keep them hanging on in perpetuity. It's fair to them to give them an answer here, in short order, so that they can jump on board with someone else, and/or to decide for themselves what they want to do. So, still haven't made up my mind, haven't decided when that announcement would be yet.

David Brody: Is that short order by the end of September? October?

Palin: I think that that is a fair timeline for people, because Fall time, they can start getting engaged with different campaigns, but still thinking about it, and really, really desiring to be a participant in the positive change that needs to happen in this country.

Economy getting back on the right track. Jobs created for Americans. I want to be a part of that, whether it be as a candidate, or as a supporter of the right candidate. I'm still in that decision making phase.

I heard Dana Loesch say on her radio show last week that there were rumors that Sarah Palin may make an announcement at the performance with Glenn beck on Oct 7 in St. Louis, MO. I don’t recall what day it was. I know that Glenn beck likes Allen West and Allen West was in Israel about the time Glenn Beck was there.

Were she not running, she would have said so already. She’s no fool, and knows that just fading out would positively end her career.

She won't fade out. If she doesn't run, she will go the route of Glenn Beck - setting her own rules for how she wants to contribute to the conservative cause.

October 31 – That’s the day presidential candidates’ names have to be submitted for inclusion on the primary ballot in Florida.

November 1 ~ candidates have to file for the South Carolina primary ballot — along with a $25,000 fee.

November 18 ~ New Hampshire primary file date ~ along with $1000 fee.

If Palin hires him it would cause me to question her judgment (but I don’t think she will).

Don't forget that Ed Rollins said some ugly and disparaging things about Palin on a radio show, early in his tenure as Bachmann's campaign manager. It was a huge flap, and he never apologized for it.

Neither did Bachmann.

So you Palinwishers are wishin she listen to Rollins? That really worked out well for Michele.

Stop reading things into people's posts. No Palin supporter worth their salt thinks Palin should listen to a damn thing Rollins spews.

Why anyone ever hires Ed Rollins is beyond me. He’s like a campaign kiss of death.

There’s nothing stopping anyone from filing for those primaries without ‘announcing’ except maybe the politics of it.

It's not possible for Palin to keep a lid on her filings. The very moment she files anywhere, it'll be blasted across the world wide web, radio, and television as breaking news.

She's not going to allow the liberal media to own her moment. She'll make her announcement, then begin filing.

Technically, it may be not be too late for Palin “to jump into 2012 race” but in the hearts of many Americans, who were patiently waiting for her, it is.

Perhaps a small percentage of Palin's supporters have succumbed to the "I can't stand waiting" virus, but judging by comments on this forum, most are keeping their powder dry, and aren't overly anxious about it.

There are key filing dates fast approaching, and Palin has said that she'll let everyone know what her intentions are in late September - early October.

I'm not sweating it. She's more or less already given us the time frame for her announcement.

She runs as an independent and/or third party

She said her book, "Going Rogue", that she'll never do that. She'll run as a Republican.

Nobody wants Romney.

Palin is the #1 choice, and Cain is right behind her. the rest are far behind. Palin will be the nominee, and I’m confident that she’ll pic Cain as her VP.

So stop worrying about Romney. He and Perry will argue for the soft head vote, which won’t amount to much. 2008 taught us a bunch.

Well, I guess Halloween is then, in fact, a drop dead deadline, as it were.

I just read here (somewhere) last night, that one state (Nevada?) has a caucus filing date of October 15th.

I clearly recall the filing date, but I may be off on the other info. Someone found the filing date info on that state's elections commission website.

Perry does not want Palin in the race. For similar reasons, Romney very likely does.

Then Romney's a fool. He can't win the nomination without the Tea Party vote, and he has ZERO credibility or connection with them. Palin, on the other hand, is the de facto leader of the Tea Party movement, and will handily take most of that vote.

The only vote that Romney can rely on, is the uninformed, last minute R voters, and cross-over Democrats in open primary states. He's not getting the conservative vote no matter what he does.

Frankly, his only path to the nomination is endurance. He'll have to somehow be the last man standing to have a hope of getting most of the Republican vote. I think he'd depress Republican voters so badly, that it might even be close in the general election.

Oh well, when its your ox in the ditch, its “don’t read things into people’s posts”, is it? The old “do as I say, not as I do” edict.

If that was not the point, then what was the point of the thread to start with?????

Wish I may, wish I might.....

If she did say that, then it is a flip flop on her previous statement earlier in the summer.

You've actually got to go back and read the transcripts of those interviews to gain some understanding of the context in which she made those statements.

I listened to those interviews, and in both cases, she was being pressured to give an answer. In the first interview, she didn't even state the time frame herself - the interviewer did, and she sort of agreed with them, that that would be a good time to announce.

In the second interview, she actually gave the time frame of late September - early October, herself.

It's sort of unfortunate, but it's a necessary component of her strategy to stay mum about WHEN she'll make her announcement. I understand that that bugs some people (most especially the MSM), but this bit of mystery is the keystone of her strategy.
