Cain: Perry camp sign 'just plain insensitive' (Cain pulls the race card)
MSNBC ^

Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain criticized the name of a hunting camp once leased by Gov. Rick Perry's family as "just plain insensitive" in an appearance on Fox News Sunday. Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain criticized the name of a hunting camp once leased by Gov. Rick Perry's family as "just plain insensitive" in an appearance on Fox News Sunday. The name of the camp — "Niggerhead" — was first reported by the Washington Post on Saturday. The paper said the name was painted on a rock at the entrance of the property. Perry reportedly began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at the secluded ranch early in his career. The offensive phrase has been painted over, but the Post's sources and the Perry campaign differ on when that was done. The Post reports that the name can still be seen through the paint. "My reaction is, that's just very insensitive," Cain told Fox. "[There] isn't a more vile, negative word than the N-word, and for him to leave it there as long as he did, before I hear that they finally painted over it, is just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country."

Well, it is.

Suppose he had a hunting club called WASPland or Micsville or Guineatown?

The more I see of Perry, the more I think he’s a nice guy, his politics are in the right place - most of the time, but he’s not ready for prime time.

Cain, the radio talk show host, the accomplished executive, and long-time Romney supporter, knew better, and yet, here’s what he said:

“My reaction is that is very insensitive,” Cain, an African-American, said on ABC television, adding that few words “inspire the kind of negativity like that particular word.”

Cain added: “Since Governor Perry has been going there for years to hunt, I think that it shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and renaming the place.”

In a separate interview with the Fox News Sunday program, Cain said there is “no more vile negative word than the N-word, and for him to leave it there as long as he did, before I hear that they finally painted it over is just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country.”

Cain took the bait. It looks like cheap shot.
He could have taken the high road and act presidential.
And i’m a certified perry hater..

Cain has promise but..have to see how things work out.

Damn, saying something is insensitive , ROFLOL, the horror, perhaps self inflected wounds would help you get over the shock.

Cain gave his opinion at the moment he was given the information.

Much like the responses right here on FR - speaking off the cuff.

Herman Cain clearly trusts people to tell him the truth and he responded accordingly.

We are learning new or contradictory ‘facts’ each minute when an anecdote like this pops up. The cynical understand that these ‘stories’ are held in the political oppo ‘pending for future gotcha moments’ file.

Cain will be OK when the water drains.

Apparently this lease was named many years ago after a field of prolific daisies in the area, which were colloquially called “niggerheads.”

What is interesting is that the name was painted over in the early 1980’s by Perry's father, and then the rock turned over.

So to see it, the media had to turn the rock back over. Literally looking under rocks to try to find some dirt.

WOW, this is worse then I had heard it was. All the Cain supporters just pretended he said the sign was insensitive and didn’t mention that he pointed it squarely at Perry. That is sickening. Our very own Al Sharpton.

Love Cain, but he’s really shown a tendency lately to fall for the media’s baiting. Really needs to get more savvy about this sort of thing.

Cain is an establishment man. He endorsed Mittens in 08. What is sad to me is Cain is being used.

Cain told Fox. "[There] isn't a more vile, negative word than the N-word

I can think of a lot worst and I hear them everyday. I like Cain and wouldn't mind seeing him go all the way. I just hope this isn't his "Bachmann's vaccine" moment.

No, this attitude will not help Cain. He called for a sense of humor and a sense of perpective. He needs to show it. That would have been a good time to laugh.

The only thing that scares me ... well, one of several things, about Cain is my experience that black trumps everything with most blacks.

We used to call them ‘niggertoes,’ pretty sure that’s right not heads, but anyway that was yesterday and yesterday’s gone ... or should be.

His family leased a part of a larger ranch during hunting season. Dad evidently painted over it very early in the lease, even turned over the rock. All of this is in the original Washington Post article. Cain should have “heard” the rest of the story when he heard part of it.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/rick-perry-familys-hunting-camp-still-known-to-many-by-old-racially-charged-name/2011/10/01/gIQAOhY5DL_story_4.html

The very people who are telling the story said that the Governor would someday be embarrassed by the story. And they are the ones who are making sure that he is. The story says that some people (who the story says “will probably” vote for Perry if he’s the nominee) laughed, saying that “Rick’s covering his tracks.” It never occurred to these people that someone would do the right thing for the right reasons.

Agreed. Today was the first time I’ve heard this story...or that term. Taken by itself, it is insensitive and inflammatory. As the story plays out...I’d expect Mr. Cain to speak again on this.

I still find the term offensive...but it looks like for all intents and urposes that Perry did too..and his father had the rock painted a long time ago...far too long ago for this to have even to have been brought up. The media is digging allright...but they’ll not set their sights as keenly on the current occupant.
