The girl's aunt told The New Haven Register that the dogs had never before been aggressive

Wish I had a buck for every time I read that.

This has nothing to do with them being pit bulls. There are just as many deadly attacks by collies, golden retrievers and beagles.

And I forgot English Cocker Spaniels, another equally deadly breed.

Pitbulls don’t kill people, people with pitbulls kill people.

Yes, I have had three Cockers over the years, vicious, dangerous, animals which is why so many gangbangers have them.

Ok, I’m going to seque off this gruesome topic for a moment. My 3 year old son wants a dog. Do you recommend some kind of Cocker Spaniel mix (I’m going to get a rescue dog so it will most likely be a mix)?

The pit bulls are the kings of serious injures and deaths. No other breed comes close. In fact you could total up the deaths caused by collies, golden retrievers and beagles then you would have to times it by 100 to even get close to the deaths caused by pit bulls.

Get a mutt with spaniel in it. Spaniels are great with kids.

A mutt. They are more loyal than any "pure" breed I have even owned.

Those poor sweet pit bulls. I can only imagine how frightened they must have felt when they saw 20 month old baby charging at them. A Golden Retriever would have reacted no differently to the sight of a child.

Hey, I’m a mutt. All my friends are mutts as well. It’s not really a negative term.

"A West Haven police officer said the dogs had been put into another room when the girl was visiting but somehow managed to get out.'

When you have to lock up your dogs while having visitors, there is something wrong.

Reminds me of the time, living in the Bronx, when my Aunts bff, who lived across the hall, her oldest grandchild was living with her and had a German Shepard named Rocky.

Rocky was out for blood. Apparently there was no training this dog. It was actually smart enough to unlock the front door, get out and attack the mailman. Rocky took about 1/2 of his calf.

After that, they had to padlock the front door, as well as the bathroom door (padlock, with lock and key). The bathroom door was padlocked so we could go and visit Mary.

I don't think it's the breed of the dog, but what it is trained or NOT trained to do. We also had a German Shepard. Anyone could come and go into our apartment without being attacked.

The only time Dukey attacked was 1 - when a bullish girl decided to try and attack my sister while she and my Aunt were out walking Dukey. He didn't get her. 2- While my Aunt was bringing back Dukey from his walk, a stranger was apparently following her and stuck his foot into the door so she could not close it. Dukey went on the attack and the perp ran away.

One other time, with my fab Duke....there was a German Shepard that lived all the way up the block from where my Aunt & Uncle lived (when we lived in the Bronx, we would go spend the summer in the "country"). Duke was getting old, so we decided to have him live in Long Island.

This German Shepard from up the block, got loose and came onto our property. We were all little kids and were absolutely frightened. Dukey took this dog and literally threw him into my Aunt & Uncles metal screen door.

This dog ran away and we were saved.

If I may? Re what kind of dog to get for a 3 year old- I highly recommend a Sheltie mix. I had two- my first was SO gentle and SO human-like he ‘herded’ the little ones. They learned to walk by grabbing handfuls of his long coat. NEVER heard one growl or snarl out of him in all of his 13 years. He didn’t have an ounce of mean in him. I could leave him on the couch with a newborn, tell him to ‘watch the baby’ and he laid with his head across the baby’s feet and barked when the baby woke. He’d pull me across the street when he saw a baby stroller. Sweetest, smartest dogs I’ve ever encountered- and I knew someone who had 13 in her house! Never saw one fight among them, ever! And none were neutered- she was a breeder and showed them.

"The girl's aunt told The New Haven Register that the dogs had never before been aggressive"

If the dogs have "never been aggressive" why shut them out into another room?
