Herman Cain’s attack on Rick Perry was a mistake
The Daily Caller ^ | October 3, 2011 | Matt Lewis

Posted on 10/03/2011 8:46:50 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

After Sunday’s Washington Post reported that Texas Governor Rick Perry had utilized a Texas hunting camp named “Niggerhead,” GOP candidate Herman Cain (a former pizza exec. and the only black candidate running for the GOP presidential nomination) wasted little time in accusing Perry of being insensitive to racial issues.

“Since Gov. Perry has been going there for years to hunt,” Cain told ABC’s “This Week,” think that it shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and renaming the place.”

When anchor Christiane Amanpour pushed back — noting that the rock had actually been painted over — Cain doubled-down, saying: “But how long ago was it painted over? So I’m still saying that it is a sign of insensitivity.’’

(Cain made similar comments on Fox News Sunday — demonstrating that this was not a gaffe made in response to a question that simply caught him off guard.)

In a prepared release, Perry Campaign Communications Director Ray Sullivan responded to Cain’s attack, saying: “Mr. Cain is wrong about the Perry family’s quick action to eliminate the word on the rock, but is right the word written by others long ago is insensitive and offensive. That is why the Perrys took quick action to cover and obscure it.”

Sullivan reiterated that the rock had been painted and turned over, and that “The Perrys did not own, name or control the property, they simply rented hunting rights to 1,000 acres of the ranch.”

My take? Cain’s comments were — at best – premature — and at worst, highly irresponsible. It was a cheap shot, and, perhaps is a signal that Cain is willing to play the race card against a fellow Republican when it benefits him.

The fact that Cain spoke out so soon — basing his comments on a newly-posted and thinly-sourced article published by an outlet many conservatives believe to have a liberal bias — speaks to Cain’s lack of political judgment.

This isn’t the first time Cain’s penchant for talking has gotten him in trouble, but in this instance, Cain has aided and abetted those who wish to portray southern conservatives as racists. In so doing, Cain provides cover for anyone wishing to cast Perry as such.

Just last week, Sarah Palin noted that “Herb” Cain was the “flavor of the week.” By siding with the Washington Post and Al Sharpton — against a fellow Republican who appears to have done nothing wrong — Cain might just have proven Palin right.

At best it showed poor judgment. Herman Cain had an opportunity to rise above gutter politics. Unfortunately, he didn’t. It’s a lose-lose for conservatives.

I don’t care what was painted on some rock at a hunting camp. I’m concerned that illegal aliens are being coddled and given special taxpayer-paid benefits instead of deported to their country of origin, as the law requires. That’s the deal breaker.

Of course you do. Of course it is. Texas disagrees with you. They pay their way. Much of education here in Texas is funded by the OIL under the schools and by property taxes. So don't go losing any sleep over how we do things in our state.

More MSM presstitutes trying to stir up the GO

Matt Lewis is far more than a MSM Presstitute. He is a mainline conservative political analyst who earned his stripes for years teaching and mentoring thousands of Conservatives while at Morton Blackwell's Leadership Institute.

If Matt's saying this Mr. Cain needs to pay attention.

And by the way.....I appreciated Cain's attitude at the debates and wrote up this vanity to highlight it. But he's shown his true self. And it is so destructive -- no one wins with this.

Your anger is misplaced.

Cain did not play the race card. The MSM did. Your anger should be directed at them, not him.

.....They would all do better to concentrate their criticism on Obama.

That's what Perry was doing but he was ahead, so all the rest of the field decided to tag team and knee cap him.

Rush is tearing up Cain over the rock false story and the gay bs.

“Cain will probably be upset over this smear by the media and the fact they used him to promote it.”

Yeah, when is he going to be upset? Next week? Next Month? After Perry wins the nomination? If Herman Cain is upset his grovelling apology is way, way overdue. More likely he isn't upset at all, just wondering whether his race baiting hurts him more than Perry or vice versa.

“This was not an attack by Cain on Perry. It was a smear on Perry by the MSM.”

It was an MSM smear Cain chose to abet for his own purposes. There is just no way to deflect the blame here. The WaPo was trying to reprise their “macaca” triumph and Cain decided to help them in the delusional belief that it could do him some good.

Cain never had a chance. This incident just helps to illustrate why. He's a small time player in a big time game and the sooner he gets off the stage the better. He'll spare himself and his supporters a lot of embarrassment.

This tells me that he didn't even read the article so he wasn't aware of all the facts and had to rely on her being truthful...

Cain should pull a Marion Berry and just say "the beyotch set me up"

Yeah, I’m sure 100% of the tax payers in Texas are happier than clams with this in-state tuition give-away scheme for illegal aliens. Spin, Perrywinkles, spin!

Cain’s comments were — at best – premature — and at worst, highly irresponsible.

The remarks would have been irresponsible regardless of how long Cain had waited.

And I note that everyone in the MSM is still referring to this place as “Perry’s ranch”—does no one understand the concept of a HUNTING LEASE? It wasn’t, and isn’t, Perry’s ranch. He has a hunting lease there. Someone else owns it......

Yes, they're lying -- it sounds better to embellish the lie with, "it's their family retreat, their land, their summer home, their get away, their ranch"......just crap.

I think Perry or his family have enough clout to ask the landlord to remove the sign as part of the lease.

Have you just landed? It was.

They LEASED 1000 acres to go to hunt (it was not a ranch). It was a section on a 42,000 acre ranch that was for needy children.

Since so many of these “Freepers” have been told what the truth of this is, and yet they continue to spout the MSM line, I’m starting to think that they know it’s a lie, making them no better than what you’d find at DU or another liberal “bastion of truth.”

Herman Cain is proving to be a complete RINO who will fight Romney for being the first to throw people under the bus with little to no facts.

Go away Cain, you are a joke.
