Michael Steele on Perry’s Hunting Camp: “It’s Very Troubling”
TIME ^ | 10/3/11

Posted on 10/03/2011 12:00:27 PM PDT by roses of sharon

Even as Texas Governor Rick Perry downplays the story of a racist epithet painted on a rock outside a property that he co-leased, black Republicans are not giving him the benefit of the doubt. First came GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain, who said yesterday that Perry handled the episode in a “very insensitive” way.

And in an interview with TIME on Monday morning, former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele also scolded Perry. “It’s very troubling on some many levels, for so many reasons,” Steele said. Steele said questions over when and how clearly the rock had been painted over miss the point:

So I’m going to lease lease a property.....Do you paint over the rock? Or do you just remove the damn thing altogether? So, I’m sorry–my attitude is just remove the rock. That is the ultimate statement for me. Just get rid of the rock. Unless the thing is a damn boulder.

Steele stopped short, however, of impugning Perry personally. “I am not ascribing anything to anyone’s motives or decisions,” he said. He added, however, that he agrees with Cain’s criticism: “I think Herman Cain was right. It does lead one to feel that there was a level of insensitivity about how this would be perceived by the larger community. I’m not just talking about black folks, I’m talking about all folks. You would think that even in the 1980s that there would still be some sense of, ‘Do we really want this on our property? Even though we’re leasing it, still, do you really want that there? And just painting over it?”

At that, Steele, who believes the Republican Party needs to make amends with black voters for its “Southern Strategy,” simply sighed with exasperation.

You are smoking something if you think you can change human nature. There is NO WAY of ever creating a perfect political party because we humans are all flawed. Good luck and let me know when you have created your utopia with enough pure members to win an election.

If that is true then the name "Niggerhead" was on the lease Perry signed, no?

Uh, no. The term "Niggerhead" most likely forms no part of the legal description of the tract in question.

Why would anybody be dumb enough to think that it was? Seriously.

The legal description for that tract probably looks something like this (as a "fer instance"):

320.8 acres, more or less, out of the T. & N. O RR Company Survey No. 11, A-712, Throckmorton County, Texas, and being the same land described in that certain Warranty Deed dated January 27, 1974, from William J. Clinton to Rutherford B. Hayes, recorded in Volume 683, Page 264, Deed Records of Throckmorton County, Texas.

See any "Niggerhead" in there?

It's a fur piece from town. You don't just drop by the paint store. Perry's story is his dad rented it. he found the rock. Asked his dad to paint it over or something. next trip out by his dad he painted it. later Rick turned it over.

Sounds very reasonable. This area is desolate wilderness ~ you'd probably die of thirst if we set you down out there and left you to figure out how to walk back to town.

While Perry and his dad were doing the right thing Obama was smoking crack cocaine!

You are right. Someone posted the actual lease agreement, and the slur isn't on it.

But the land was called that, wasn't it? It wasn't just a random slur on a rock, like graffiti, it was the name of the land, no?

Would you have said that to John Adams if you had been alive at that time?

But you miss my point. I’m not trying to change human nature. Rather, I’m putting my faith in God, not the US governemnt in any form voted on by the current electorate. They’ve proven their nature over and over. I’ve made my choice and disconnected as much as is reasonable now, and prepared to disconnect more as the need arises. I’m now fully prepared to go completely off the grid if necessary. If it is to be it is up to me, and the solution to our current problem is outside of mans hands. The problem is too big. WAY too big. We are headed for a hard landing, almost certainly by next summer at the latest, no matter which human being, living or dead, we choose to attempt to lead us out of it.

But these threads are very interesting.

So, calling someone insensitive is the same as using the race card? LOL. no wonder Perry is losing ground.

It's all an "if true" sort of thing. Cane referred to the word.

BTW, the Leftwingtards had already fallen for the idea that Perry's campaign was over when he told me I was HEARTLESS.

Stupid batarde that he is the man imagines i don't care ~ but I do care ~which is why you can see that I am defending him on this thread, among others. Doesn't mean I want him as President ~ but there could be a place for him in a Cain administration (for example).

Now, Perry owes me one ~ actually two since I came up with two really, really important items for him (1) He was the Texas governor who executed the guy who killed that blackman by dragging him by a chain on a pickup truck, and (2) While he and his dad were painting over that rock with the offensive word/name Obama was busy wasting his by smoking crack cocaine!

The contrast is inescapable ~ Perry was avenging a black man and Perry was removing insulting words that cause black people pain. Obama was behaving in a manner that can only bring shame to black people.

To Wit: If there's a blackness contest going on, Perry is black enough and Obama isn't.

Just for the record, the rock in question is HUGE. I’d say it’s probably 6’ wide and 4 or 5’ tall....who knows how far it is in the ground...and probably a foot thick or so.

It’s not just some little small thing.....

I’d guess after the past couple of days that the rock has been buried....at least that’s what I’d do.

Well, Michael...is it as troubling as addressing a racist political organization? Seems to me you've addressed the NAACP (who only says "Colored People" when they beg for money). Also seems to me you've addressed the Congressional Black Caucus......Don't see many white faces there, let alone any black Republicans except you, once. If that isn't troubling I don't know what is, hypocrite

Cain was on Hannity a minute ago and Cain didn’t help things much with that interview. Can’t say he was a shocked, surprised or hoodwinked today.

That’s really too bad. Hopefully, somebody will post it. Unlike Cain I really don’t want to make a decision until I have actually read what he said.

Here is Herman Cain's quote:

"... And since Governor Perry has been going there for years to hunt, I think that shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and RENAME the place".

Herman Cain is claiming that N***Head was the NAME of the acreage. So which is it? The NAME of the acreage, or a random graffiti on a rock at the entrance?

Perhaps the owner of the Niggerrock should put a building around it and sell admission to view it.

I guess he could blow it into a couple of million pieces, bag them and sell them to gift shops.

Mount those rock chips on to gold and that ‘bling’ would sell like the dickens.

This entire subject is silly. The lib media planted it, Cain watered it instead of killing it and now that buffoon Steele fertilizes it.

Silly, silly and just plain stupid.
