Obviously, he doesn't think he's bearing false witness

Right.

Lots of folks think they're right. Some of them are (were) among history's most hideously evil. Neither intensity of conviction nor numerical commonness of belief have any real bearing on correctness.

he's so certain of his position that he feels he has the right to impose it on the rest of us.

That problem is not restricted to explicitly religious fanatics.

BTW, would you care to share a few words on how you came to the Church? I always find that interesting.

As long as we elect a candidate that governs conservatively and with the sames values a practicing Catholic would, I don’t care if they pal around with idiots.

Why should we care about anything Jeffress says? And why should Perry have to apologize for him?

He’s not the pastor of the church Perry currently attends, and he’s just your usual Southern fundamentalist Protestant to whom hating the Catholic Church is as natural as breathing. I live in the South and I hear this sort of thing all the time, and I just ignore it.

No, I was addressing this, which you wrote: When you have to dig up and put lies out...says to me they can’t find anything worthy against Perry.

So, again, his stance on illegal immigration isn't a worthy issue?

Billy Graham was not alone in what he said. Josef Stalin was not alone in what he said.

Exactly.

How does Jeffries?

Jeffries equates the Catholic Church with "Mystery Babylon". That, in itself, is a distortion and perversion of the Word of God. That the comment is brief is no defense.

I too am surprised by the “shock”. These guys make a living hating on Cathlolics and Mormons and whoever. Why the surprise??

Try reading the works of Jonathan Edwards. If he and the other great Puritans were alive and preaching today, Jeffress would look very mild and temperate by comparison.

Sidenote for clarity: I’m a firm Protestant and layman in the Presbyterian Church in America(PCA) denomination. However, I have no problem with voting for a Roman Catholic individual who shares my political views and have done so in the past.

FWIW, I’m most enthusiastic about Cain. I just don’t like how we’re so eager to attack Republicans for unsubstantiated accusations or tenuous affiliations.

I’m most enthusiastic about Cain.

I'm warming up to him, so we can agree on that.

Would love to, but it would take more than a few words, and I don't want to further highjack this thread than I already have.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue offered these remarks today: Where did they find this guy? When theological differences are demonized by the faithful of any religion—never mind by a clergyman—it makes a mockery of their own religion. Rev. Jeffress is a poster boy for hatred, not Christianity.

Ping for later

Actually, I’ve read quite a bit on this. There is strong support for that argument. It is not a fringe belief. I don
‘t hold the belief, but that is because I choose to focus on things that are a bit less speculative. Likewise, I don’t tell those that believe in pre-tribulation rapture that they are perverting the Word of God just because I disagree with them (I’m Mid-trib which is really post-trib, pre-wrath).

Now, if this guy was claiming that Jesus is not Lord, that would be a horse of a different color.

Hating on Catholics and Mormon individuals as people or hating the doctrines that their religious institutions teach?

And, what do the Catholics have to say about the Baptist?

I have read on FR many times a post from a Catholic saying, that, the Catholic is the only TRUE CHURCH.........

This what we Baptist believe, it is not hate or bigotry.

Madison was right:

Happily for the states, they enjoy the utmost freedom of religion. This freedom arises from that multiplicity of sects, which pervades America, and which is the best and only security for religious liberty in any society. For where there is such a variety of sects, there cannot be a majority of any one sect to oppress and persecute the rest.

James Madison, Virginia Ratifying Convention 12 June 1788

The reality is that the media will be all over this starting now. The association with Perry will be sealed whether you like it or not. Perry should have been more careful who he associated himself with. It’s a full damage control issue for Perry now.

Our old church read a lot from Jonathan Edwards, so I’m well aware of the types of things he used to say.

And I share your perspective. As long as the person’s stances are broadly in line with my Catholic values, I’ll consider voting for him. The remarks of Pastor Jeffress may be ignorant, but Perry has already stated that he doesn’t agree with everything the man says. That’s enough for me.

But his stances on illegal immigration make it impossible for me to support him.

Hmm. Catholics think Protestants are going to h_ll, and Protestants think Catholics are going to h_ll. That’s new. Meanwhile we have to live on earth where secular progressive are currently making our lives here h_ll.
