For decades, Jack Daniel's whiskey has celebrated its small Tennessee hometown of Lynchburg with folksy, black-and-white advertisements urging folks to slow down and have a sip.
Now local officials want the maker of the world's top-selling whiskey to pay a bigger bar tab as they struggle with their budget. How does up to $5 million sound?
A measure approved by the Moore County Council asks the Tennessee legislature to authorize a local referendum on whether the distillery should pay that much in new taxes on the 500,000 barrels it fills with whiskey each year.

How about an across-the-board $5M employee paycut while at the same time instituting a new benefit for workers commuting beyond, oh, say the distance between the distillery and the city limits. The commuter subsidy just might happen to make up for the paycut. Net result, the locals pay for the action of their elected revenuers.
Jack Daniels should tell the local government greedheads they will soon be making plans to start up another distillery in a more appreciative locale.
Without the tourism and jobs created by Jack Daniels the city of Lynchburg will be little more than a wide spot in a lonesome road and a place for the unemployed to pick up their food stamps.
That is what happens 'cause Libs drink too much Chablis and not enough sippin' whiskey.
let’s see...Hank Williams Jr, Gibson guitars, and now Jack. Has Obama declared war on country music?
Kentucky Whiskey?
Tennessee Bourbon?
I don’t know..... :-)
Might be....there seems to be a target on Tn’s back. I say that has the makings of a good Election night party...Jack Daniels,Guitars, and Hank? Woo hoo......LOL!
I just caught a bit of this on the news. I watched a program the other night on the History Channel or Nat.Geographic on the distillery and how the whiskey was made, stored, taste tested and delivered. I didn’t catch how many people were employed but they were all regular, hardworking folks. Another Made in America success story..made me smile.
Whay does the government insist on killing off it’s Golden Geese? So frustrating and maddening.
~$1,000/yr/acre. How much does hilly land go for down there?
Lynchburg is already just a wide spot in the road. We stayed a few days there in a B&B last April and there’s nothing there to do. I’m sure the locals make a killing off the BBQ cook-off. Charging people to park in their yards brings in a chunk of change.
As for moving it would probably be cheaper to just pay the taxes. That’s what the local government is counting on. The move would be expensive. There are very large buildings sittin’ on top of the hills that are packed full of barrels of aging whiskey.
Because libtards do NOT think but talk. They are brain-dead imbeciles. When exactly have these morons ever make sense?
~$1,000/head/yr.
Needless to say, both JD and the local town made quite a bit on hubby & I as we purchased quite a bit for gifts.
IMHO, the town owes JD for it's livelihood because it if wasn't for JD, the town wouldn't be there. Go ahead, tax JD until it moves, then the town will go kaput.
please protect good American jobs....if whiskey is all we have left to produce, then so be it....we'll drink it up....
FOX talked about this a few minutes ago. They said they already contribute 64% [?] for taxes for their product! Did I hear them correctly? Are we out of our friggin’ minds for putting with our government!!!
Local business taxes are always up for negotiation if the business is a large enough employer. All J-D has to do is threaten to move. Watch how fast the demand for taxation comes down to something approaching ‘reasonable’.
They can’t move. They’d lose their spring with the perfect limestone filtered water.
How much money will this bring in to the “County”
Nazis? This is making money for the county and populace!

If it weren’t for Olde No. 7, no one would know where Moore Co. is.
Also they should rename the county, MORE!
Well let’s see JD you already have your bottles made in Ohio....you may want to talk to Gov. Kasich about what kind of abatements you can get for moving your distillery here too.Would save you a bundle on shipping the bottles...
Dear Mr. Charles Rogers, don’t forget that the Jack Daniels brand has been involved in the success of Lynchburg and the people of Moore County, not just the other way around. If Jack Daniels gets more expensive as a result of this proposed tax, I MIGHT still choose to buy it, but I would definitely think twice about visiting Lynchburg for a distillery tour, since the city apparently has such an envious ugly attitude toward one of its major businesses. Sorry, hotels and restaurants that may have benefitted from my visit!
