If you have ever wondered about the government’s ability to control the civilian airwaves, you will have your answer on November 9th.

On that day, federal authorities are going to shut off all television and radio communications simultaneously at 2:00PM EST to complete the first ever test of the national Emergency Alert System (EAS).

Yes, I was still 5. And thank you for offering to give me a hug. Where were you when I was 5? My Mom and Dad were outside watching the firemen put out the fire, and they could have cared less that I was hiding under the bed. Eventually, I realized what was really going on and went outside as well.

CB probably not even on their radar since most people don’t have power licensing and equipment to go more than a few miles. Plus they can triangulate or just “see” the equipment and know where it is.

Also, if being bombarded in school with this stuff wasn’t enough, I couldn’t escape it on Saturday mornings while watching the cartoons. The commercials would show people shopping on Main Street, USA when the sirens would go off and how they would have to duck into doorways or brick buildings. It traumatized me.

What about old analog TVs without any attached digital gizmos. Could they ever be used as an alternate communication system? I don't see how, but perhaps you may want to ask backwoods-engineer if he can think of anything.

Amateur radio operators already use old analog TVs to receive amateur TV transmissions, since we "hams" can use either the old analog or new digital methods of transmitting video. Any cable-ready TV will receive on cable channel 57, which is 421.25 MHz, the most common amateur TV repeater output, and cable channel 60 (439.25 MHz) is the most common repeater input frequency. So, to have a 2-way video conversation, one guy transmits on channel 60, and receives on channel 57, and the other guy does the opposite.

In the movies, when you want to shut down the grid, it is because when you bring it back on, there is something new added, something no one suspects

That, or you are shutting it down to hide something already running, that you need everything to shut down to upload something that will be new and running on restart

I cant think of a single reason to do this, either good or bad, except to prove he can do it

Interesting choice of dates. On This Day in Hitory, November 9:

1799: Napoleon Bonaparte and fellow conspirators seize power and establish a new regime in France.

1918: The German republic is proclaimed after Emperor William II abdicates and flees to the Netherlands.

1935: John L. Lewis founds the Congress of Industrial Organizations within the American Federation of Labor.

1938: During Kristallnacht, mobs in Germany destroy thousands of Jewish shops, homes, and synagogues.

An arbitary date? I don't think so.

This is not a test. Tests occur at 4am, when people won’t be bothered.

This is a demonstration.

I wonder if that’s what they do in that super secret underground facility near Pittsboro, North Carolina.

And all those terrifying air raid drills were pretty useless and unnecessary, considering that if nukes really were coming, hiding under your desk in a class full of glass-windows was going to be the worst place you possibly could be. Just goes to show you how idiotic government has been in the past, and still is, unfortunately.

You can say that again. What was funny, thinking back to that time, was the students sitting next to the windows had to move to the other side of the room and do the duck and cover routine. Like moving a few feet was going to do any good. Besides, we would have all been fried anyway.
