In a shocking development , John Hugya, former aide to the late Congressman John Murtha, announced his support for SSgt Frank D. Wuterich, the last of the Haditha Marines awaiting exoneration.
The statements by John Hugya were reported by Philip Petrunak in the Somerset County Daily American on October 20, 2011.
According to the article, Hugya said "that he supports Wuterich and believes he should be exonerated. Hugya added that if Wuterich is convicted, the president should pardon him."
In May 2006, Hugya's boss at the time, John Murtha, charged that SSgt Wuterich had led a squad of rampaging Marines in Haditha, killing civilians in cold blood.
By 2008, seven of the eight Marines charged in the incident had been exonerated. Only one Marine, Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich, still awaits trial.
SSgt Wuterich's trial is scheduled to commence on January 4, 2012, a date after all US forces reportedly will leave Iraq. As DOM previously reported (see SSgt Frank Wuterich and Our Future in Iraq ), the entire Haditha fiasco affected negotiations at the very highest level with Iraqi officials over the continued presence of American troops in that country.
Thanks for linking.
That’s a classic video of a coward.
The trial judge should make the first order of business on Jan. 4th 2011 the dropping of all charges against Frank and the dismissal of the case.
It would also be most welcome for the judge to order that all involved in the government's prosecution of the case MUST FORMALLY AND PUBLICLY APOLOGIZE to Frank Wuterich, his family, all other Haditha Marines and their families, the Marine Corps, and finally the American public.
Well doesn’t that just go to show ya, we Can learn our lesson!! Good for him!
Well said, smooth. I couldn’t agree more but in reality it probably won’t happen. There’d be a lot of high up people both inside and outside the military with much egg on their faces.
Well, the apologies will never happen, that's for sure. Isn't it just great to know that our tax dollars are paying the salaries of many of those spineless weasels.
Thanks jazusamo.
Thank you Jaz for posting and David for writing this news breakthrough. Will wonders never cease!!!
What an interesting turn of events. And as you indicate, it could end up being good news for SSGT Wuterich.
It is my pleasure, Mom. And you’re “right on” about the wonders. :-)
The US failed to come to a status of forces agreement with Iraq granting immunity to our troops from Iraqi prosecution, the US responded with Obama’s announcement of a withdrawal.
Simply put, this is suspicious timing for “justice.”
It says that Wuterich was a show case trial with the Iraqis, and that the US needed a Wuterich conviction to convince the Iraqis that any troops tried by the US instead of by Iraqui courts would be punished.
Wuterich has been a pawn in the status of forces negotiations.
Now that the talks have broken down and we are exiting Iraq, the US no longer needs a Wuterich conviction.
Sad, but probably true. A terrible miscarriage of justice
There is much in evidence to justify such an assertion. I certainly see what you’re saying. What a fustercluck.
Dead on right, X.
SSgt Frank Wuterich wears the same face I saw on all Staff NCO’s during my time in the Corps. There is no mistaking the command presence and basic dedication/goodness of these dedicated warriors to American Values and Ideals.
Where does America find such men? Will we continue to deserve their sacrifices in protecting our Freedoms and rights?
God I hope so.
The prosecution of SSgt Wuterich is a national disgrace, led by the small minded politicians of the corrupt and idealogical bankrupt Democrat left. (Thankfully ex- marine John Murtha, has received his reward (sic), and is now gaurding the streets of hell. Right were he belongs.)
2012 is the year to sweep our nation clean of the Democrat left and rid ourselves of this scourge.
In my mind SSGT Wuterich is a national treasure and a hero in every sense of the word. Exonerate and release SSgt Wuterich.
You’ve put in words what myself and I believe many others here have thought for several years.
It has been and is a terrible miscarriage of justice.
