Sometimes the craving hits--so what if you are the POTUS and the city is on traffic lockdown during their already busy rush hour to accommodate your arrival--and you need some Roscoe's Chicken 'n Waffles. And stop is exactly what President Obama did last night, en route to two pricey fundraisers, with an unscheduled snack break at the Roscoe's in Mid-City on Pico.
So what did Obama order up at the famous L.A. eatery? He reportedly got the No. 9, which is the "Country Boy" (3 wings with choice of waffle, potato salad or French fries).
L.A. Observed has details from the pool reporter:
Pool had to enter from the rear, to see booths full of early-dining families stretching and craning their necks excitedly to watch POTUS, who already was at the counter ordering for himself and nearby aides, including Valerie Jarrett, Jay Carney, David Plouffe and Marvin Nicholson. With him was Representative Karen Bass, the Democrat who represents the area in the House. [...]
POTUS, coatless and shirt sleeves rolled, then walked to one side of the restaurant and greeted the diners in each vinyl-covered booth. After hed shaken hands and chatted with a young African-American boy who looked to be about 10, and moved on, the boy turned to the white man he was dining with and said, Im never going to wash my hand again. For minutes afterward he continued to hold his left hand aloft, fingers spread, as his eyes followed POTUS around the room as if in wonder.
Obama worked the room, and the pool reporter noted he was making a lot of small talk and signing autographs. Hugs were given, photos were taken. The food was brought out in to-go containers.
An L.A. thing.
I'll bet those were left wings too.
"That's the way it's prepared in PA Dutch country. We had it a lot when I was a kid."
That describes the traditional southern "chicken and biscuits" (by the way, there is a reference to it in the stage version of the musical "Hairspray" - it's Edna's craving for this dish that leads her to visit North Ave (a traditionally african-american section of Baltimore), where she sees Tracey). I don't see how it defers in any substantive way from creamed chipped-beef on toast, except that waffles catch more of the gravy.
However, judging by Roscoe's menu (see: http://www.roscoeschickenandwaffles.com/) the Country Boy is fried chicken with a choice of a side (waffle or potato salad or French Fries). The waffle is simply a starch side dish - not all that unlike a biscuit or cornbread (other traditional southern accompaniments to fried chicken).
Give him a break. He is just practicing being “black” for the election.
Then he missed the best part of that photo op...
EXACTLY - JUST LIKE YOU SAID “Typical arrogant, doublespeak LIAR!”
This white guy likes many of the foods that, historically, Blacks seem to have as favorites, but I had never heard of that one. LOL
I agree with your take on this ‘love me, I’m Black’ crap.
No Moochelle in sight. Time to chow down on fried food!
I was wondering the same thing.
