Report: Germany could halt Israeli submarine deal over settlements

Oct 30, 2011, 12:15 GMT

Berlin - Germany has threatened to suspend the delivery of a nuclear-capable submarine to Israel, in protest at the country's settlement policy, according to a media report released Sunday.

Government sources confirmed to Der Spiegel news magazine that Germany may withhold a Dolphin submarine commissioned by the Israeli military.

Israel already owns three strategically important Dolphin submarines, the weekly magazine reported, while two more are being built in the German harbour city of Kiel.

Earlier this year, the German government granted 135 million euros (191 million dollars) to help Israel buy a sixth Dolphin submarine - a deal that is now reportedly threatened by Berlin's objection to the country's settlement policy.

In September, Israel gave the go-ahead for the construction

The Germans have plenty of their own problems — they shouldn’t give a rip about what part of the Holy Land Israelis want to live. Perhaps they’re pandering to their ever-increasing Muslim population, now over 5%.

So why do they, in spite of their own problems?

Same old Germany.

Thanks sukhoi-30mki.

I guess Israel will have to wing it (so to speak) against naval threats.

Knew a fella who fought in Patton’s Army and he had few kind things to say about Germany.

Wow. Germany is still stuck on stupid. They just can’t seem to put it all together when dealing with Jews.

They are the last country that should be telling Israel what to do.

This is a new era and a new Germany.

They focus on the problem because they like good trade
and oil with the Middle East. They are acting out of self
interest.

I’m sure that the boats will be quietly finished and allowed
to discreetly leave port to suddenly show up in Haifa harbor by some surveillance imaging.

But some concession will be made by Israel, symbolic in nature. Maybe one settlement will move across the line. Those boats are vital to Israel, they are determined to get them.

I am sure Germany will come through. Currently they are Israel’s best friend.
