Cain Confronts Claim From ’90s of Sexual Harassment
New York Times ^ | October 31, 2011 | JIM RUTENBERG and MICHAEL D. SHEAR

Posted on 11/01/2011 5:26:24 AM PDT by lbryce

Herman Cain, a surprise leader in the Republican race for the presidency, acknowledged Monday that he was accused of sexual harassment while chief of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, but he denied wrongdoing in an episode that has consumed his rising candidacy.

Facing the biggest test of his campaign just as it was demanding notice from a political world that had not seen him coming, Mr. Cain spent the day in a whirlwind of television interviews and news briefings that were originally supposed to highlight his economic plans but became an exercise in damage control.

He maintained that he had been falsely accused and that internal investigations at the association had corroborated that. But his explanations evolved during a day in which conservative supporters rallied against what they called an unfair attack from the news media, while others expressed fresh doubts about a campaign that has yet to prove it has the mettle to survive a national nominating battle.

Mr. Cain’s shifting explanations and the gaps in the story made it hard to determine the impact of the revelations on his long-term prospects in states like Iowa, whose crucial caucuses are just two months away.

In the early afternoon, Mr. Cain told a gathering at the National Press Club in Washington that “I am unaware of any sort of settlement” related to harassment accusations, which he called “a witch hunt.” But in an interview with Greta Van Susteren of the Fox News Channel shown Monday night, he acknowledged that in at least one case “there was some sort of settlement or termination,” worth “maybe three months’ salary.”

“This is another high-tech lynching,” the conservative commentator Ann Coulter asserted, reprising Mr. Thomas’s famous term from his confirmation hearings.

The MSM and their liberal, left-wing cohorts are celebratory in their deluded discovery of a potent tool/weapon in which they hope to derail Cain's formidable position with accusations of sexual harassment that have consumed his rising candidacy. It's mostly about people whispering in the darkness, people who remain anonymous, people who refuse to speak about it, as basis for these allegations.

No matter how paltry, unsubstantiated these allegation may be, the MSM, left-wing liberal moonbats, even Republicans are having a field day, at least temporarily, with alleged revelations of wrongdoing by Cain which eventually, I hope, will have Cain thoroughly absolved of all, any accusations.

This morning, my local news reported it as ‘sexual misconduct’, not ‘sexual harrassment’.
To me, that makes it sound worse than it was. Maybe it’s just me, but ‘misconduct’ makes it sound like something he physically did, not just something he said.

Anyone else noticing the media saying this?

Yup, I’ve been on the fence about donating to HC. No more today he will receive his first 9.99 from me.

Actually, Nuconvert... I was sort of thinking the opposite. Sexual harassment (to me) sounds like it was an ongoing issue. “Misconduct” (again, to me) makes it sound like one event that could have been an “improper” joke, look, statement etc... Harassing sounds like a constant bullying while misconduct sounds like it had to be interpretive.

This starts with a question from Politico : “Have you ever been accused of ...???.. Please answer yes no”

Then the Scarbouro/Rove RINOs accuse him of not being ready for him refusing to answer specifically .

Then (in response) you got two interviews by Cain that appear to contradict each other (see above), and the RINO s calling him a liar. And Democrats just watching and enjoying.

Only the worst Perry trolls are joining the MSM in trying to make political points off of this.

You know, trolls ... just like you.

If you had any shame you would just shut up instead of rolling in the liberal dogpile in front of you.

He lied...said he didn’t know about a settlement....well, he did.

So tell us the lie here:

In the early afternoon, Mr. Cain told a gathering at the National Press Club in Washington that “I am unaware of any sort of settlement” related to harassment accusations, which he called “a witch hunt.” But in an interview with Greta Van Susteren of the Fox News Channel shown Monday night, he acknowledged that in at least one case “there was some sort of settlement or termination,” worth “maybe three months’ salary.”

Did it occur to you that someone told him the details about a settlement in the intervening time interval?

LOOK! A FRESH MSM TURD! LET'S ROLL!

They should tell it like it is: 2 ladies apparently tried to exhort money from the company by making false claims against the CEO.

I just want someone to ask Mr. Cain if he smokes cigars and if so, did he ever use a cigar as a sex toy.

This is a weird statement. Why the word “but”? If in the early afternoon he didn’t know, but by that night he did? Would he not have learned some things between the two statements? Is the information not getting to him at a very rapid rate?

It looks an awful lot like spin on the part of the NYT.

When? Where in that article is there any evidence of a lie? I’m missing it.

"two people who were affiliated with the restaurant group at the time said that they knew of the second female employee, and that she had received a payment related to harassment accusations against Mr. Cain . . . The two spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid being pulled into the matter publicly . . . [one spoke of another incident] but this person declined to give details."

Anonymous sources, no details of the "crime" -- yep, it's the Nytimese idea of "reporting."

And it's why I say Journalism should wash his shorts and get rid of of them skid marks pretending to be reporters.

In general, the MSM employees seem to be downplaying the "act" (BJ and others did much worse) and instead they are attacking Cain for his "failure" to respond in a manner that they approve.. which of course is impossible because the MSM employees won't be happy until Cain is destroyed.

I recall a few liberals following Election 1964 asking did they go too far trying to destroy Barry Goldwater.

This will stay in the news trying to cause guilt by association. My local paper had a big story this morning of how Anita Hill led off the battle against sexual harassment. The guns are all coming to bare. Funny how obummer has a phony social security number and it was NEVER mentioned in any lamestream news outlet that I saw. Hang in there Mr. Cain - this too will pass.
