Penn State AD Tim Curley, VP Gary Schultz will step down after Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal
New York Daily News ^ | 12/7/2011 | Michael O'Keeffe

Sunday night, Penn State announced athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz have stepped down amid allegations of an explosive child-sex abuse scandal and cover-up.

And while the pair will not survive the scandal, it is believed Penn State football icon Joe Paterno probably adhered to the letter of the law when he told the school's athletic director-but not the police-that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky allegedly sexually abused a boy in the Nittany Lions locker room in 2002......

if Gricar’s disappearance is involved in this....

...kind of a stretch, is it not...and in any case, that will never be known...

Those are old stories from many years ago. Apparently, Gricar’s disappearance was something of a hot local topic and was covered widely.

But at the time Gricar went missing, no one had any inkling that he had been investigating Sandusky.

“Are they covering up, or did McQueary not tell them what he really saw for reasons we don’t know?”

I’d hate to think he’d be so calculating as to intentionally withhold information as a means to protect him (and thus...himself)

If my son had called me and told me had just walked in on a child being raped and I found out that
a)he did not try to physically intervene
b)he allowed the child to remain in the custody of the rapist
and
c)he failed to call 911 to report a crime AS IT WAS OCCURRING.

I certainly would be very ashamed.

but perhaps this is the mindset in these circles.

Many, many stories from years ago.

The Gricar story they covered. I’m wondering how long the local journos have known about Sandusky.

So many questionable actions in all this.

Starting with the graduate assistant (apparently a former QB for Penn State and current coach): Why didn't he put a halt to what he was witnessing? Presumably as a young athletic man he had the ability to do so. Or if he was too shocked/sickened to act right away, why didn't he at least call 911 as soon as possible? Why lay it at the feet of Paterno? But then once Paterno got hold of it why didn't he do more to make sure that Sandusky was never around children again?

Or what if it had been a janitor instead of a former high profile and highly respected def coordinator? Does anyone really think things would have been handled the same way? Or would they have had police swarming the campus within an hour?

Of course it wasn't some no-name janitor, it was a near legendary defensive coordinator that JoePa had once coached and then later worked with for many years as one of his asst. coaches. So he had known Sandusky for probably 30 years or more. It had to be hard to come to grips with the possibility that a guy you've known for so long, and presumably had a good relationship with, could turn out to be a real life Jekyll & Hyde. And yet there was another incident with a boy in '98 which seems to have led to Sandusky's retirement later that year. So it didn't come completely out of the blue.

Then too the witness had played QB while Sandusky was still coaching and although they were on opposite sides of the ball i'm sure the QB viewed Sandusky as an authority figure. So it had to be a double shock for him: first the act itself and then seeing that the perpetrator was a man who he probably had held in high esteem, perhaps even as a father-figure.

Not an easy situation and naturally no one wants to bring a scandal down around themselves and an institution that they've been a part of for a large portion of their lives. An institution that enjoyed a pristine reputation and in fact thrived largely because of that reputation.

Not easy and yet the question will long remain for all those who got caught up in this horror: did they do everything they could to make sure another child wasn't raped or were they more worried about the school's reputation, their own reputation, their own job security?

(other questions: why did Sandusky do these horrible things in places where he could easily be caught in the act? did that possibility add to the thrill or did he think his status and relationship with a legend would allow him to get away with anything? did Paterno and/or the witness do more than we realize to try to bring Sandusky to justice? on the other hand, could Paterno have "suggested" that Curley & Schultz not look too diligently into the matter and would they have felt compelled to follow his direction? how much power does/did Paterno actually have at PSU? were people at Second Mile alerted to what may or may not have happened in the locker room? seems that during an on-going investigation of this sort that Sandusky should have been suspended from working around children at least until the investigation wrapped up...)

Okay you’re a homer. I get it. PSU can do no wrong and has always exhibited the highest standards. Got it.

Having been now for 2 1/2 years a real, live working reporter, that is a very important question!

The conclusion I have reached - after watching REAL newspaper and TV reporters cover the very same stories that I do - is that to keep your job at a TV station or newspaper you have to know what questions NOT to ask.

And what stories NOT to cover.

The cynical view would be that he withheld info for personal gain, but part of me wonders whether there isn’t a possibility that McQueary couldn’t bring himself to say what he saw, figuring that an investigation would yield the gory details.

Of course, this is all speculation on my part.

I'm not defending PSU, just Paterno. He has always had the highest standards and if he was part of a coverup, it would be way, way out of character.

I don't give a fig about PSU or the football program.

interesting.

I would have 2 questions.

One to McQueary....”what exactly did you tell JoePa the following day?

and to JoePa...”how exactly did McQueary describe what he saw?”

Spanier must go. And, I’m afraid, so must Joe...

...easy call on Joe...I mean, the guy’s 84 years of age and can barely hold an audible conversation any more, anything other than going is not even remotely possible...Spanier, I don’t know...if PSU ends up wanting to turn the page quickly, then possibly everyone, including the assissant coaches, will have to go...imagine the taunting from opposing fans in road games if this is allowed to drag...if this same thing can almost bring down Holy Mother Church, it can certainly ruin a college football program...
...right now, a brand new face and regime at PSU might be just what the doctor ordered, unthinkable as it might have otherwise been...

I can see McQueary not giving the full details because he would be ashamed to admit that he did not stop it.

I’m working a story even now about a local assistant DA (who I’ve known for 40 years) that is alleged to have traded sexual favors for plea deals.

Me. I call for arrest of the most of the Penn State Athletic Department and all other officials in that State-funded establishment as co-conspirators to a horrible and on-going series of crimes against children. The criminal code counts that can be applied are quite numerous.
