Gricar’s older brother was a suicide, which might indicate he could have such tendencies.
I don’t know if the Power Structure (or whatever term fits) would resort to payoffs before first attempting veiled threats against Gricar.
At least that’s the way the local “good ole boy network” does it here in Louisiana.
All of the sudden, the problems at Miami don’t seem so bad.
The young coach was no doubt horrified, but what if the little boy had been groomed to the point where he was compliant and not struggling or complaining? That may have been so bizarre that the shellshocked coach was rendered momentarily senseless. Without leaving the building, he ran to a phone and called his dad, which would make sense for someone dazed and confused. Realizing his son was traumatized and/or talking crazy, the dad told him to come right home, which he did. They went together to Paterno’s home the next day, probably as soon as he’d see them. I think the young coach, who Paterno described as “distraught”, told him exactly and in detail what he’d seen (this was 2002), but Paterno either lied about it now or has forgotten due to his advanced age.
Sandusky retired in 1999.
Thanks. My Typo.
The media. Sportswriters, reporters.
The payoff money probably could have funded PDOT for a week!
Here's where, IMO, your thesis doesn't hold. I read the entire Grand Jury transcript...
The TA first said that he heard noises, sounds of a struggle from the shower..that's why he went to look. The, (IN HIS WORDS) he observed Sandusky ANALLY RAPING the young boy. There's not much wiggle-room in that statement. He was aware of what he saw, recognized exactly what was happening...and it's NOT a pretty image to contemplate...nope..sorry for the young man, but he was most definitely lacking when he needed to step up...you just can't jwalk away and leave a 10 year old boy to continue being.....well..enough of that.
He said he said it. As it went up the chain, it somehow got massaged so that they could push it under the rug as not that big of a deal. Of course it was a big deal. It went all the way up to President Spanier!
I can imagine something along the lines of:
Schultz: Now Mike. I realize you are upset. But remember, you have a job here, we are your friends. Why I just talked to Joe and he says he thinks we have an opening for a new wide receiver coach position and he thinks you would fit right in. It is so hard to believe that our Sandusky, who has done so much for our program would have any harmful intent regarding children. Are you sure that you saw what you say you saw? Maybe they were just horse playing. We see that all the time in the locker room. Just innocent fun, right?
Given that he probably knew about the previous investigation that was shelved by the DA, he may have worried about more than just his job.
BTW, the that DA (Gricar) disappeared three years later.
