About 50 minutes before it was about to begin, PSU administrators canceled Joe Paterno's weekly news conference Tuesday.

Penn State administrators have canceled Joe Paterno's weekly news conference in which he was expected to field questions about a sex abuse scandal involving a former assistant coach.

Paterno's son Scott tells The Associated Press on Tuesday that the decision was made by President Graham Spanier's office.

Scott Paterno says his father was disappointed and was prepared to take questions about the scandal as well as the upcoming game against Nebraska.

Rocked by an alleged child sex abuse scandal, Penn State issued a statement late Monday saying that Paterno will only answer questions about football Tuesday during his regularly scheduled press conference.

Yeah true, but what I don’t understand is why they thought they could keep this secret forever. Flies in the face of common sense.

Ask Gricar.

Remember that hunk of crap out west a few tears ago who was videoed walking out of a public washroom where he knew someone was being sexually assaulted, and he sanctimoniously claimed it wasn’t his problem, and to everyone’s frustration, there was nothing to prosecute him with? Paterno isn’t very different than that scumbag, even if he lived up to the legalities of the matter.

I suspect that they are treating Joe with tender gloves depending on how much he knows and what he could say against Ped State if they treat him meanly.

Hard to argue against that.doesn't he also fit in the desciption of what the law considers a "mandated reporter" with a duty to do so?

In accordance with PA state law on the matter, Paterno was *not* a mandated reporter, so is in the clear legally (this is why he hasn't been, and won't be charged.) Did he have a moral obligation to go further? Hell yes, and he didn't so his undoing is his own fault...

I am a big football fan, and a long time admirer of Paterno until this week, so I have looked at this trying to give the benefit of the doubt to the athletic department and the university. That being said I’m sorry, but you are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG about Paterno.

All you need to know is that Paterno tolerated that monster remaining on his staff after he knew exactly what type of sick pervert he is. That in itself is grounds for immediate dismissal, and no amount of charity, or working below market rate can make up in even a small way for this complete lack of moral character.

The desire to delay this (and indeed the complete coverup since 2002) is rooted entirely in the belief that the football program is more important than criminal sexual abuse of children. That is the biggest indictment of Penn State and all the individuals involved, and I wouldn’t be sorry to see them all banned permanently from college football.

If there was some way that Paterno continuing could undo some of the damage or right some of the wrong, then maybe you’d have a point. But it can’t, so you don’t.

Bingo!

Everyone is salivating at the chance to hang Paterno, but it’s ridiculous. He did not witness it. Sandusky was no longer on his staff at the time the grad assistant came to him. The grad assistant and father should have gone to the police if they were witnesses. So instead, let’s hang Paterno? Where is the anger at the grad assist. and father for not going to the police? And most of all, where is the anger for Sandusky?! People have their priorities screwed up because they love to see prominent figures taken out. They love dirty laundry as the song goes.

This college is an criminal enterprise. Needs to be stricken from football record books and banished from college football altogether. Let the Courts sort out the details, punishments and monetary awards.

If ever a prime example of corruption, this should be made an example of for any future student-players everywhere. The whole foundation and basis was flawed to say the least.

The fact that McQeary discussed this with his own father and with Paterno is an indication that he was struggling with the issue and trusted that it would be dealt with correctly by those in the administration.

McQueary had the evidence of his eyes that it hadn't been dealt with correcty.

Penn State isn’t on federal land or a “federally operated facility;” this statute IMHO does not apply.

The university put out a statement yesterday that they wanted everyone to remember that this week/game was dedicated to the seniors and they didn't want the scandal to overshadow that celebration ...

Wow, are they getting advice on how to handle this from the Vatican?

This whole thing is sickening - if I walked into a locker room and witnessed an old creep buggering a ten year old boy, my first instinct would be to crack his skull with something and then call the COPS. Joe Paterno is up to his sorry butt in this scandal, and he can rot in hell with the rest of these perverts.

Damn straight!!!

I have a 10-year-old grandson. If I witnessed something like this happen to him, I would kill the bastard on the spot with my bare hands!

PATERNO AND ALL AT PEDOPHILE UNIVERSITY CAN ROT IN HELL FOR ALLOWING THIS TO HAPPEN FOR SO LONG!

All schools receive federal funds and are covered: I'm a retired teacher and can attest to that fact due to hours of staff development expended listening to the same lecture for years!!!

hired by the state to be his defensive coordinator

Ridiculous statement.

Paterno put him on his team as a player, Paterno personally hired him as an assistant coach when Sandusky was just 25 and Paterno personally promoted him to DC in 1977.

Implying that Sandusky was externally imposed on Paterno by the state government against his wishes is, to put it politely, repulsively dishonest.
