Penn State trustees fire football coach Joe Paterno and PSU president Spanier

Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.

The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.

But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.

One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

Kirk Herbstreet says: “This is not about NCAA violations. This is off the Richter scale.”

I was just watching that. Herbstreit is a stand-up guy who seems to have his priorities right. In that same interview, he also pointed out this huge brouhaha isn't about Joe Paterno -- it's about the young boys who were victimized and betrayed by a corrupt system.

It's startling to me the Pedo State student riotors can't see that.

As another poster said earlier today, the entire campus of PSU needs to be bulldozed and burned to the ground.

How does Paterno know the story is true? How does he know the graduate student didn’t have something against Sandusky?

He didn't know. That's why he should have informed the police so they could investigate the possibility that horrible crimes were being committed in his domain. And, be sure, the athletic facilities were Paterno's domain no matter what some organization chart might have said.

The B1G TEN conference is about revenue, just like every other conference. Keeping PSU in the conference will drain revenue from all the other schools, including ad revenue on their network.

Hooray for reactionary hyperbole!

Will you be leading the Cain lynch mob later as well?

It is just not logical to think these men didn’t know what was going on. No one stepped up to put a stop to it because no one wanted to get involved and he had clout. It is just a disgusting abuse of power

OMG, are you serious? Why don’t you go join the students then? Clearly you have not read the grand jury report.

The statute of limitations have NOT expired per PA law:

Serious sex crimes such as rape carry a statute of limitations of twelve years. When a sexual offense is committed against a minor, however, the statute of limitations does not start until in the minor reaches the age of eighteen.

This will affect every single college and university. College football will never be the same.

yes, because no other college sport has ever had a scandal before. *rolling eyes*. One guy, nine years ago, did something bad... And so many people want to punish tens of thousands of others who were not involved, all to assuage their feelings in an orgy of plitically-correct lashing out. Pathetic.

Absolutely! This isn’t about the football team and university. It’s about ruined lives and failure to act.

It was his MO. He used the practice to his advantage. Hence, his MO.

I was very well aware what the OP intended to state, as I am aware of the definition of MO. The phrasing used in the original comment was poor in that it insinuated that telling a student athlete to shower "whether they were sweaty or not" was peculiar or wrong. Him taking advantage of a child in the shower was wrong - instructing athletes to shower is not. I made it clear that I was not busting the OP's chops - just clarifying a poorly worded statement.

You may return to your 3rd grade regurgitation of the obvious.

PSU will clean house. That’s obvious. The Big Ten needs to just see what remains.

And NINE YEARS later, we sacrifice one of the best coaches in history, all for the glory of political correctness.

And because Joe ignored the problem many little boys were raped in the butt during that time.
