Penn State trustees fire football coach Joe Paterno and PSU president Spanier

Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.

The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.

But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.

One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

Nobody is defending the pederast, you retard.

Some people are arguing against punishing tens of thousands of people who aren’t involved at all. Some are also against punishing the only person who even came close to doing the right thing.

Um, those are called pertinent facts. They bear repeating, especially on a thread where people are lashing out with nothing but hate-filled emotions (note the lashing out at me personally already LOL).

There are REASONS why our justice system acts with slow and deliberate motions... Because mob mentality like you see here, among otherwise intelligent and rational adults, gets very ugly very quickly. Sadly, we're just as eager to dive into a Five Minute Hate as the mindless rabble on the Left. I understand that this particular topic evokes intense emotions... Which is exactly why rational review is crucially important.

Even IF some admins are found to have been slow or negligent in their reporting of these events, the punitive measures suggested here and elsewhere are mostly gross overreactions. Sorry if that offends your sensibilities.

I’m a lifelong football fan. Never thought much about Penn State, because I don’t think much of the East Coast in general. But I always believed the story that Joe Paterno was the epitome of Coaching, raising young men to be their best, la la la...

I’ve been truly shocked by the news this week, and at my age I kind of thought I was unshockable. Obviously, Paterno knew what was going on and did Absolutely Nothing!!! Not even the least thing, such as revoking Sandusky’s privileges to the football facility.

My son is about the same age as McQueary, and was a husky football player in college. If he had caught this monster in the act he would have shoved him into the shower wall, taken custody of the boy and called the Cops. That’s what people do who have been raised to know the difference between right and wrong.

Does Paterno know the difference between right and wrong? Apparently not.

I have the feeling justice will prevail here. In whatever form it appears.

In 2005 that same DA went "missing", in June of 2011 he was declared "legally dead". That's something in a Mafia Movie from Hollywood.

Not only that, but the hard drive was removed from his laptop, and destroyed so badly that no data could be recovered from it by expert data recovery firms.

This stinks to high heaven.

We need to start discriminating the idiots not deserving of an education past grade six, from those who can actually learn.

It worked in England for centuries until quite recently.

It’s quite obvious you either know nothing of the facts or you don’t give a damn. The new wagons didn’t come out UNTIL A GRAND JURY INVESTIGATION OF SEVERAL YEARS CONCLUDED! Who do you think those jurors, the district attorney and police spoke to to reach this report? Spirits from beyond? They spoke to the victims and their families!

Do yourself a favor and shut up.

Though I don’t like to kick anyone when they are down (with the exception of perhaps the Kenyan occupying the White House), I am thrilled with the firing of Joe Paterno.

I love college football and I’ve always enjoyed the story of the man.

However, NO college football program’s reputation, no man’s legacy, should supersede the safety and well being of innocent children. From what has happened at Penn State, there is no other possible motive for these men to have ignored their moral obligations other than protecting the school and later, themselves.

I do NOT think that Joe Paterno did not know of locker room rumors of Sandusky’s sexual proclivities! He worked with him for YEARS,

He knew.

These kind of supporters are the ones who bust their rear ends all week leaving little time for more than a couple distractions in life. Pennsylvania is a huge football state and most of these rural people played when younger. It is just like basketball and Indiana University here in my Hoosier Wonderland. It’s just what you do.

Uh, you miss the point. Little boys were being raped in Joe's locker room and nobody did anything about it.

The fact is that you must make several assumptions already (”you think he went on a Sunday” etc). Those who rush to convict, and decimate entire universities, entire sports, etc, long before any judicial proceedings are held, are the same kind of people who are ideal for tyrants and zealots in their rise to power. Try waiting just a few days, and for a few actual facts presented under oath, before calling for the death penalty for the crime of failure-to-report (which usually gets a bad write-up in a file, and a few days of administrative leave in most career paths).

The graduate assistant went to his office and called his
father, reporting to him what he
had seen. His father told the graduate assistant to leave the building and come to his home. The graduate assistant and his father decided that the graduate assistant had to report what
he had seen to Coach Joe Paterno (”Paterno”), head football coach of Penn State.

The next morning, a Saturday, the graduate assistant telephoned Paterno and went to Paterno’s home, where he reported what he had seen. Joseph V. Paterno testified to receiving the graduate assistant’s report at his home on a Saturday morning. Paterno testified that the graduate assistant was very upset. Paterno called Tim Curley (”Curley”), Penn State Athletic Director and Paterno’s immediate superior, to his home the very next day, a Sunday, and reported to him that the graduate assistant had seen Jerry Sandusky in the Lasch Building showers fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy.

From page 7 of the grand jury report.

Since the DA in 98 and the one in 05 were the same guy, we will need one of those mediums to conduct a seance in order to question him.

Yep, and that suggests this thing goes much farther and possibly involves powerful people. Maybe that’s why nothing was done despite numerous people reporting things they saw going on with Sandusky.

Dime to donuts PSU will be kicked out of the B1G TEN

I Doubt it.

Penn State will rebuild and survive. UM basketball survived Ed Martin. MSU survived the 70's probations and end of the Perles era. Ohio State will survive Tressel.

Penn State will clean house, but if they get it right on the new coach, they will be back. They are the flagship major school for the entire northeast as well as Pennsylvania which is loaded with in state talent each year.

They'll be rough times, but PSU will be back.

FACT: Everyone from the janitors up to the president knew that Sandusky was bangin boys in Joe's showers and NO ONE did a dang thing about it.
