Washington (CNN) A new national survey of Republicans indicates that it's basically all tied up between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, with Gingrich on the rise and businessman Herman Cain falling due to the sexual harassment allegations he's been facing the past two weeks.
According to a CNN/ORC International Poll released Monday, 24% of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP say Romney is their most likely choice for their party's presidential nominee with Gingrich at 22%. Romney's two-point advantage is well within the survey's sampling error.
While the level of support has pretty much stayed the same for Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who's making his second bid for the White House, Gingrich has seen his support jump 14 points since October.
The poll also indicates that 14 percent back Cain, down 11 points from last month. Four women have alleged that Cain sexually harassed them during the late 1990s when he headed the National Restaurant Association. Cain denies the allegations.
"Cain is struggling with the charges of sexual harassment, and while most Republicans tend to dismiss those charges, roughly four in 10 Republicans think this is a serious matter and tend to believe the women who made those charges," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.
The survey indicates that only a bare majority of Republicans tend to believe Cain, and more than a third say he should end his presidential campaign. Among the general public, Cain has a bigger credibility problem - 50% of all Americans say they tend to believe the women and only a third say they believe Cain.
"Not surprisingly, there is a big gender gap on this matter - women say this is a serious matter and believe the women,

Yes, I realize that zulu is speaking of primary voters, leaving me to recall that even I, a Tea Party supporting whacko, voted in the democrat primary to try and help to shape the 2008 democratic nomination results. I expect the same of Independents this year in those states where you are permitted to cross over vote, or who will register as Republicans for the ‘12 Election. This will be a cross over voting year, I expect, like no other, into our primary. Independents will not be voting very conservatively, but are likely to boost the empty suit, Romney.
It’s not helpful for Freepers to run down either Newt or Cain or any of the rest. One can compare their plans, but the attacks are counter-productive. What we should be doing is celebrating that either Newt or Cain is going to defeat Romney. Glory, glory, Romney won’t be our candidate!
” I know all the arguments against Newt.
Ive made them myself.
Ive decided Im not going to defend Newt on FR. He defends himself quite well and doesnt need my help. “ <<<<
Very well said.
I simply do not believe Bachman, Santorum, Paul nor Huntsman have a prayer of either winning the nomination, nor beating Obama. By January, they all will likely be out entirely.
Rick has plenty of money and the eye, still, of political players and PACS, enough to garner a comeback, if he is able. He not be able.
This leaves the weight of accomplishment and political bloodsport experience with only Newt and Romney, and Newt will enter the meat grinder to have his old sins rehashed by professional hit agents. “They” want Romney at all costs. The media, dem and republican machines are in this thing together. For them, it’s Romney or bust.
I hope Newt can, by now, afford a war room. He’s going to need one.
R: I think Newt and The Flirt© would make an excellent ticket
The WHO? Give us a name...
Gingrich is making a legitimate move but never use polls in a primary that use Independents.
Republican Likely Voters are the polls to watch.
I can't remember her name. It was the chick with the moose eyeballs who flirted with America for two years, took in millions from believers and then moved to Arizona (hopefully, to challenge Mcwhatshisname). You know. The tall one with the legs. I do, however, think a repentant Flirt© would make an excellent VP after the appropriate fences are mended with those of us who got burned.
The CNN poll breaks out Republicans only, and the results are largely the same except Romney is slightly ahead of Gingrich.
Cain still has dropped massively.
Waah Waah.
Poll not show what I like. Me not like poll. Me proclaim poll rigged.
C’mon, people, are we still doing this?
I guess you can choose to not believe it but I hear a lot of people talking about Newt in very positive terms lately. I think the polls are correct and I definitely believe he is in the top .
Deservedly so. Newt is a tired old has-been establishment RINO, and a serial adulterer to boot. Just his sitting with Pelosi is enough to make me vomit.
No sale. He will never get my vote.
NEWT REGRETS CLIMATE AD WITH NANCY PELOSI
A flip-flop. Ok, so what’s your point?? Funny he says he regrets it as we near 2012.
Agree. Someone with that kind of immorality cannot be trusted to save America. or run the country anytime.
You just signed up a few days ago. Whose train are you on?
I’ve heard Newt left one of his wives for another woman while she was in the hospital with cancer. I do not know if this is true, but I have heard this claimed numerous times. Also, one of his affairs took place around the same time he was going after Clinton for his, if I understand correctly.
Hysterical.
