Cain’s campaign on Libya gaffe: He had four hours of sleep last night and was taken out of context

Good enough?

“The video is being taken out of context,” said spokesman JD Gordon. “He was taking questions for about 30 to 40 minutes on four hours of sleep. He didn’t say anything wrong or in accurate; it just took him a while to recall the specifics of Libya.”

Gordon added, “It just took him a while to gain his bearings.”

The clip was posted unedited by the Journal-Sentinel so I don’t know what context he thinks was missing. Is there some context that would explain why he needed the editorial board to remind him whether Obama is pro- or anti-Qaddafi? Because I’m thinking pretty much every one of our readers could nail that detail even on three hours’ sleep.

According to Andrew Rafferty of NBC News, “When I asked Cain if today’s Libya gaffe builds on idea he doesn’t have in depth knowledge of foreign policy, he simply said, ’999”. Not a joke.

I guess we’ll be okay as long as President Cain never gets a phone call at 3 a.m. The irony of today’s supergaffe is that I think it’ll do him much less harm among primary voters generally than the harassment charges have, even though his hair-raising vagueness on key foreign-policy details is much more certain than whether he did anything to his accusers. Only political junkies will see the Libya clip; thanks to Gloria Allred, everyone’s seen the Bialek presser. ABC’s out with a new poll tonight, in fact, showing Cain’s favorable rating now stands at 29/44, a steep drop from last month’s rating of 31/27. That’s a poll of adults, not of voters, but don’t forget that Rasmussen also found his favorables underwater at 37/51 in a poll of likely voters last week. I don’t know how he turns that around

Ok, so here we are:

Cain's allegedly not able.

Romney(care) isn't even an options - no way.

I can't ever support Newt at the top of a ticket, but he's a good choice for veep, so tolerate yes, support as candidate - never.

Perry? Nope. Even from the beginning, he was "Bush Light" and that disqualified him altogether. On top of that, he's a worse public speaker than Bush, and that is some achievement.

That leaves me with the entire 2nd tier of candidates.

So who do you suggest?

“This wasn't a “gotcha” question.”

Not a “gotcha” question but definitely a “gotcha” moment. That was an un-micked print interview recorded from a still video camera. I'm sure Cain had no idea that it would be released for public consumption and as such let his guard down. In the end his answer wasn't bad, the problem was getting there.

The poster is :

Bears repeating.

This poster would think they could find other things to occupy their time - such as perhaps helping with the floods, than meddle in US politics.

That said, what did Cain allegedly say? PS: I'm for Cain 100%.

I like Herman Cain. I believe him to be honest and have the best interest of the American people in mind.

I will support him as a person in all the personal attacks lobbed at him because I belive them to be scurrelous lies.

I also believe the left thinks he could win or they would not attack him like they do.

That said, Herman really has areas like foreign policy and national security that he needs some serious briefing on.
They are not his strong suits and he is hurting himself when questioned in those areas.

The savage attacks of the left he has survived, but the damage he does to himself is undoing him. Perry has the same problem. Self inflicted.

Cain is becoming way too gaffe prone lately. That clip was horrendous.

Cain ahs totally messed up countless times, yet he gets a free pass every time. Especially on Cain’s very moderate past (From Wikipedia;)

2008 presidential election;

In 2008, Cain initially praised Democratic candidate Barack Obama, saying of Obama that “His gift is the gift of oratory. That’s not just the ability to speak, but the ability to connect with people.” He also said that he would consider supporting Obama “under the right circumstances” but only if he made a serious attempt to “reach across the aisle”. Eventually, Cain instead endorsed Mitt Romney in the Republican primary.

Second Amendment;

Cain believes that any concealed carry law must be dealt with at the state level[86] and that states have the right to control gun rights.

Affirmative action;

Cain supports ensuring that minorities receive the same opportunities as non-minorities. He does not agree with a “quota” style affirmative action system, which he believes gives an advantage to minorities simply because they are a minority.[38]

Do you actually ever post anything which isn’t a Cain-bash?

Just checking.

[”Anyone can see Cain was exhausted in the video, and anybody making a huge deal out of this is anti-Cain. Each of the candidates has made a mistake somewhere, either in an answer or a decision.”]

It's shameful that the ex Palin supporters have given Cain every excuse in the book like they did Palin, and then turn around and disgrace/destroy Perry for something similar.

Like it or not, the double standard from your cult, cannot be excused or justified. But more so it is so obvious, that the only ones unable to see it is your little group of Zealots.

And you have never posted anything bad about Perry, or countless other candidates who you don’t think deserve to get the nomination?

Double, double on that one?

Any president will have to rely on his advisers - he couldn’t possibly keep all the details of every issue in RAM - not even Newt.

We're not talking about who is the president of Uzbeckibeckibeckistanstan is. We're talking about a major foreign policy decision taken by this president within the last few months, and whether Cain thought he did the right thing or the wrong thing. And Cain couldn't come up with a coherent answer. As near as I can tell, Cain could have backed Gadaffi in this.

It’s “ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan”. No z. :D

In a couple years we all may be missing Gadaffi, and realize how bad a decision this has been.

I believe Libya has just become the next Iran. In every way.

You don’t suppose Cain thinks that too? But realizes he’d take a PR drubbing if he said that out loud?

From both sides.

It’s bad. But I honestly think he was exhausted. But it’s still very bad.

If you’re that tired, don’t do the interview. I don’t blame Cain. I’m certain the grind is exhausting regardless of how much sleep you get.

However, I think he’s being terribly handled. Whoever is running his campaign isn’t running it well and they are making mistakes. Maybe he doesn’t have the human infrastructure he needs right now and it’s starting to show.

They better figure it out quickly, because “I was taken out of context” is starting to get old.

In a couple years we all may be missing Gadaffi, and realize how bad a decision this has been.

So should a President Cain support Assad in Syria for the same reasons? Like it or not Gadaffi had lost the support of his population and he had no chance of staying in power short of mass murder. Same with Mubarak. Same with Saleh. And there is nothing the U.S. could do to prevent it. So either you get on the winning side, and hope for the best. Or you stand four square behind the loser, and go down with them. No, we have no idea what will happen in a couple of years. But regardless, it's better not to be so closely connected with the despot that they overthrew.

1. Equating Cain to 0 is not really that helpful.

2. Cain does not have the old media being the offensive line for him unlike 0. In fact, he has them playing the defensive line against him.

Herman better get his game on.

Yeah. It pissed me off to see him doing this interview. If he’s tired, and is not pro perly briefed, he shouldn’t do it.

I do expect the POTUS to be able to form answers more quickly and decisively. It was in a more relaxed setting, but surely he knows cameras are always running.

I’m a huge Cain supporter, but he needs to get it together fast. If he doesn’t, it shows me he can’t study up quickly enough — or doesn’t care.

There’s a LOT of time left ... we’ll see how it goes.

I think it gets down to exactly how much of a grasp on foreign affairs does our president really need to have? Do we require expert level? Or do we require stronger leadership/executive ability to lead a team?

At this point though, I'd rather see Cain or anybody else in the Oval Office, including the guy from "Slingblade", rather than the communist foreigner.

bump

Yeah, I'd crawl over broken glass to vote for Ron Paul over 0.

Yeah, Ron Paul is a whackjob.

I suppose that applies to Mittens too.

Let's do what we can to get an intelligent conservative as the nominee. We have five chances -- Cain, Perry, Newt, Michele & Santorum.

Are we really going to screw it up?
