Cain’s campaign on Libya gaffe: He had four hours of sleep last night and was taken out of context
HotAir ^ | Monday November 14, 2011

Good enough?

“The video is being taken out of context,” said spokesman JD Gordon. “He was taking questions for about 30 to 40 minutes on four hours of sleep. He didn’t say anything wrong or in accurate; it just took him a while to recall the specifics of Libya.”

Gordon added, “It just took him a while to gain his bearings.”

The clip was posted unedited by the Journal-Sentinel so I don’t know what context he thinks was missing. Is there some context that would explain why he needed the editorial board to remind him whether Obama is pro- or anti-Qaddafi? Because I’m thinking pretty much every one of our readers could nail that detail even on three hours’ sleep.

According to Andrew Rafferty of NBC News, “When I asked Cain if today’s Libya gaffe builds on idea he doesn’t have in depth knowledge of foreign policy, he simply said, ’999”. Not a joke.

I guess we’ll be okay as long as President Cain never gets a phone call at 3 a.m. The irony of today’s supergaffe is that I think it’ll do him much less harm among primary voters generally than the harassment charges have, even though his hair-raising vagueness on key foreign-policy details is much more certain than whether he did anything to his accusers. Only political junkies will see the Libya clip; thanks to Gloria Allred, everyone’s seen the Bialek presser. ABC’s out with a new poll tonight, in fact, showing Cain’s favorable rating now stands at 29/44, a steep drop from last month’s rating of 31/27. That’s a poll of adults, not of voters, but don’t forget that Rasmussen also found his favorables underwater at 37/51 in a poll of likely voters last week. I don’t know how he turns that around

Does it matter what he thinks about US politics?”

Of course it doesn’t matter! No more than what you think! But then why did you ask?

True, or he could:

Browbeat conservatives over man made global warming being "settled science"

Refuse to cut off welfare to new legal immigrants, as was stipulated in the Contract With America.

Say something Perry-esque in a debate on illegal immigration such as: "No, but let me say this, John. No serious citizen who's concerned about solving this problem should get trapped into a yes/no answer in which you're either for totally selling out protecting America or you're for totally kicking out 20 million people in a heartless way."

Or he could try to sell us on the idiot utopian Alvin Toffler.

Or he could try cramming ObamaCare mandates down our throats,,,,, again.

Mr. Cain was thoughtful, as usual
He didn’t know that federal employees don’t have collective bargaining, even though this issue has been at the top of the news for the last few months. That’s not “thoughtful,” but ignorant. We should expect that our nominee know such basic facts.

And if Romney didn’t fumble on such basic facts once? You’d prefer him?.

People, we are not in a magical election where there are perfect candidates waiting in the wings. Newt probably cannot beat Obama. I am even thinking that if he makes mincemeat out of Obama at the debates, Obama will call him racist and newt will fold in fear. I don’t see Romney beating Obama either, though he might. How much better than obama would a Romney presidency be?

1 I can vote in the US.

2 Another poster asked why you feel Cain can't win.

Where did I say I’ve written off Cain? Contrary to popular opinion these days on FR, I can criticize Cain without renouncing support for him.

Newt and Romney are both more electable than Cain. Cain has made more embarrassing statements that he’s had to walk back or clarify in a short time than just about any politician I’ve ever seen. If he were the nominee and the full force of the MSM was brought to bear on him - continually - he would be destroyed.

Yes, Libya is an obscure country and when they are interviewing a Republican, they are going to ask them about obscure countries like Libya to see if they know all the minutia regarding some little military skirmish or a gotcha question about trivial issues such as if China has nuclear weapons or not.

Anyone can see Cain was exhausted in the video, and anybody making a huge deal out of this is anti-Cain. Each of the candidates has made a mistake somewhere, either in an answer or a decision.

The mistake Cain made was trying to answer an overly broad, vague question when tired. He should have criticized the complexity of the question and given the short answer, “no.”

People tearing down Cain are helping Obama get a better night’s sleep, since his biggest political fear is the unknown, which is Cain - a wise, successful, self-made black American.

After these attacks, whether Cain makes a come back remains to be seen. I enjoy Newt’s debating skills and instant recall of history, but his professorial tone may cut into his likability. In these hard times, we need a leader who can inspire. Nothing in Obama’s/Axlerod’s strategy prepares them for Cain. They’re destroying his character so they don’t have to face him in the general election, period.

“I like Cain a lot. Like I said, I think he would be a reasonably good president. He comes across as the most likable, the most honorable, the most honest of all the candidates.

I just don’t think he is electable anymore.”

I just met Mr. Cain and had my picture taken with him tonight at the Green Bay Packer game. He looked great and was a hit at the tailgate parties.
But after watching this interview, I am in shock as to how he and his handlers could let such a thing happen.

Everyone who is savvy about campaigns knows that candidates need to be briefed by experts...BEFORE they are interviewed rather than after.

You think Newt would not do well with uncommitted, swing voters? Why?

Cains fallback answer to just about everything: “I was taken out of context.”

In all fairness, sometimes he says "I was taken out of concept"

Talk about a head scratcher.

At this point though, I'd rather see Cain or anybody else in the Oval Office, including the guy from "Slingblade", rather than the communist foreigner.

Don't be ridiculous. Newt could take a 3AM phone call, questions from the WH Press Corp, and give a SOTU address all on 30 minutes' sleep without once having to ask an advisor for details.

All while copping a feel on Nanzi Pelozi.

The reason he is relaxed and unguarded is because he was giving an interview for print while not wearing a mic. The video appears to be taken from a small video camera. Although I'm sure Cain knew the video camera was on, he never looks at it and he obviously had no idea that this interview was being filmed for release to the public. This is the first time I can remember an print journalist editorial board releasing such a video.

He was not in the least uncomfortable with his answers,

Then he is out of touch with reality.

He's done. He isn't POTUS material. Period.

So the Tea Party and Conservatives are in favor of Collective Bargaining for Public UNIONS. Cain is.

This was worse than Libya!

He has not been questioned about a lot that he hasn't answered " 9 9 9."

It was obvious in the debate with Newt that he didn't understand the question a time or two.

Not POTUS material!

So if Cain wins the election we had better hope that any crisis that happens, happens after he’s gotten at least 8 hours of sleep?

Completely untrue. Mr. Cain was thoughtful, as usual, and there were one tiny pause so he could form his sentence best for people to understand his point.

Did you watch the same video as the rest of us? He paused for a good 10 seconds, and then when he started to answer, he said something like "I don't agree with Obama for the following reasons . . . no, wait, that's a different line," which makes it sound like he was trying to think of the right talking points/canned answer to respond to the question. He then spent another 20 or so seconds hemming and hawing before finally starting to answer. He didn't look 'thoughtful,' he looked lost.

Cains fallback answer to just about everything: “I was taken out of context.”

And since that is growing thin, then it appears that his new fallback answer will be, "I didn't get enough sleep."

What if it's Cain at his average?

It might be an “obscure country,” but it is also the site of a significant U.S. military involvement, which has been ongoing for roughly the duration of Cain’s candidacy. They weren’t asking about “all the minutia,” they were asking a general question about the approach Obama has taken. This wasn’t a “gotcha” question.
