House Speaker John A. Boehner publicly blessed a Republican deficit-reduction plan Tuesday that would raise $300 billion in additional tax revenue while overhauling the IRS code.
In doing so, he bucked opposition by some GOP presidential hopefuls and colleagues wary of violating a longstanding point of party orthodoxy.
Mr. Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, spoke as time grew perilously short for agreement by the deficit-fighting supercommittee. The panel has until a week from Wednesday to vote on any compromise, but several officials said that, in reality, perhaps as little as 48 or 72 hours are available to the six Republicans and six Democrats.
While Mr. Boehners voice is important, his endorsement does not mean all Republicans will follow him or that a deal is in sight. Republicans have been unified for two decades in opposition to higher taxes, while Democrats on the supercommittee insist on additional revenue before they will agree to cuts in benefit programs like Medicare as part of a compromise.
The speaker said that the plan, outlined a week ago to Democrats on the committee, was a fair offer. Adding tax reform would generate economic growth, he said, speaking as the supercommittee groped uncertainly for a compromise to reduce red ink by $1.2 trillion or more over a decade.

The Democrats are pretty smart if this goes through. They know the GOP have no spine and will bend easy. The Democrats are playing the George HW Bush playbook. There plan is to:
1. Raise taxes
2. Run a wimp like Romeny and keep the base at home.
Hey BONER what part of NO did you not get! NO means NO.
We don’t want new taxes.
If you don’t like our message, you can be fired by your constituents next year.
Both he and McConnell.
The Dems got their asses kicked in ‘10 and the Republican response was to “power share” via politburo.
DeMint’s also saying that legislators are trying to cram some kind of farm bill into whatever the Stupor Committee puts forth.

Yup. This guy wants to create a new Great Depression. And he’s a Republican?
So much for bringing change to Washington. He lied.
What they really want to do is ram through tax increases without having to go on the record.
And they wonder why the American people have so little regard for them.
Breaking their pledge, that’s why!
Raise tax revenues? How about close the loopholes that let multi-millionaires like leftist WARREN BUFFET (who think Americans making $200K should foot the bill instead of themselves) hide their cash away? How about get rid of tax exemptions for charitable contributions that draw resources away from productivity?
So long as the idiots in Congress insist on playing the demagogic “class warfare” game against the upper middle class, the real rich parasites will never pay their dues—and the “humanitarian” NGOs will continue to siphon the economic lifeblood of the U.S.A.
Yup.
The Greek conservatives get it. Raising taxes kills jobs and makes sure the economy won’t grow for years.
A year in power has taught the GOP leadership nothing.
If any here agree with a flat tax or Cains 999 or a variation of either then you really have nothing to complain about with what is in this story.
I read it and unless I missed something nowhere does it say anything about a tax RATE increase. It talks about a REFORM of the tax code which is EXACTLY what the flat tax would be.
I don’t see anything about moving to a flat tax.
What I see is a tax increase.
They’re not reforming the tax code - its just sucking money out of the productive sector of the economy and giving it to the government.
Both parties want to rape and tell us its for own good. But it hurts more when Republicans are doing because they’ve said for years we should shrink government in Washington.
They’re doing the exact opposite of what they told voters they would do.
They seem to forget why they lost their House majority in 2006.
That is exactly what is being done. They are changing the tax code to eliminate loopholes and shelters, NOT raising tax rates. Why do so many frickin people on this site refuse to read the english language. Raising revenues is not the same as raising everyone's tax rates. It was the same crap with differentiating between health CARE and health INSURANCE. Nobody in this country is denied health CARE.
The linked story speaks in non-specific terms of higher taxes, higher tax revenues, and tax reform, as if these terms were interchangeable. This probably reflects the reporters' level of understanding, which is apparently at the kindergarten level.
You beat me to it. Ditto.
Parsing language.
That’s so dishonest. I didn’t fall off the back of a turnip truck.
Using euphemisms doesn’t change the substance of what is being proposed.
Using Boehner’s weasel words isn’t winning you friends on here.
Yeah... you’re in favor of higher taxes. Engaging in sophistry is the oldest rhetorical trick in the world.
And you believe everything politicians say?
If you want to increase taxes, say so honestly. But drop the weasel words. Its an insult to people’s intelligence.
The newsmedia keeps playing Freepers by:
1. Prnting a story with a misleading headline knowing most people won’t read story.
2. or printing a story with little detail with a misleading headline.
“Extending” “unemployment benefits” is a fair offer to reduce the deficit? On the surface, this looks JUST like Obama’s economic plan, including that eat the “rich” tax.
