Mark Twain famously wrote, "There is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress." Peter Schweizer's new book, "Throw Them All Out," reveals this permanent political class in all its arrogant glory. (Full disclosure: Mr. Schweizer is employed by my political action committee as a foreign-policy adviser.)
Mr. Schweizer answers the questions so many of us have asked. I addressed this in a speech in Iowa last Labor Day weekend. How do politicians who arrive in Washington, D.C. as men and women of modest means leave as millionaires? How do they miraculously accumulate wealth at a rate faster than the rest of us? How do politicians stock portfolios outperform even the best hedge-fund managers? I answered the question in that speech: Politicians derive power from the authority of their office and their access to our tax dollars, and they use that power to enrich and shield themselves.

We need equality under the law. From now on, laws that apply to the private sector must apply to Congress, including whistleblower, conflict-of-interest and insider-trading laws. Trading on nonpublic government information should be illegal both for those who pass on the information and those who trade on it. (This should close the loophole of the blind trusts that arent really blind because theyre managed by family members or friends.)
No more sweetheart land deals with campaign contributors. No gifts of IPO shares. No trading of stocks related to committee assignments. No earmarks where the congressman receives a direct benefit. No accepting campaign contributions while Congress is in session. No lobbyists as family members, and no transitioning into a lobbying career after leaving office. No more revolving door, ever.

All these congress critters commit many crimes non congress Americans are sent to jail for. It is disgusting.
Maybe it’s time to adopt some elements of the Chinese criminal justice system into our corruption laws, specifically in the penalty area.
Words, just words, Sarah.
Riding Schweizer’s wave will help the sale of his book.
Pray. Hard.
The simplest answer is to shrink government influence and size and power - thus shrinking the value of having this insider info to begin with. As long as government is too big and powerful, folks will find a way to scam the system. And it doesn’t matter if we started with 435 new congressional members. Human nature is what it is, and the only way to reduce this is to reduce government. Period.
You were hoping for hieroglyphics, maybe? Smoke signals? Whadda slunkish tool.
Bachus is next after trashing the Tea Party and Palin concerning the 2010 elections.
Amen. Think she could seek the VP slot again? Cabinet?
LBJ had to borrow car fare to get to Washington his first year in Congress
He left owning most of the radio stations in Texas
Louie Javits as a Senator bought property in Florida and sold it to the Feds, The Feds built a naval air force base on it
Correction- Javits not Senate, but a member of the U.S. House of Representatives
Yeah, good words.
Word Up!
Sarah running an independent campaign would be a dream-come-true. I've had it with both parties. Nothing will ever change for the better as long as they hold the reins of power.
A Sarah Palin article that is very ping worthy. She nails it once again!
