Dear University of California Supporter,

I'd like to share with you two messages from University of California President Mark G. Yudof in response to the recent events on some UC campuses. I believe it is important that you and other members of the UC family be informed about how the University is responding to the issues raised by these events.

The first message is the President’s immediate response issued yesterday (Nov. 20th), to an incident which occurred on the UC Davis campus Friday.

The second is an update released today on the developments that have taken place in the last few hours.

In addition to President Yudof’s statements, a message from the Chair of the UC Regents, Sherry Lansing, is also available at this link: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/article/26709

Clearly, these are challenging times for our state, our students and our entire university community. We will continue to keep you apprised of developments as they occur. In the meantime, and on behalf of President Yudof, I thank you for your continued support for the University of California.

Sincerely,

Steve Juarez
Associate Vice President
State Governmental Relations
UC Office of the President

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UC Office of the President

President Yudof acts in response to campus protest issues

University of California President Mark G. Yudof today (Sunday, Nov. 20) announced the actions he is taking in response to recent campus protest issues:

I am appalled by images of University of California students being doused with pepper spray and jabbed with police batons on our campuses.

I intend to do everything in my power as President of this university to protect the rights of our students, faculty and staff to engage in non-violent protest.

Chancellors at the UC Davis and UC Berkeley campuses already have initiated reviews of incidents that occurred on their campuses. I applaud this rapid response and eagerly await the results.

The University of California, however, is a single university with 10 campuses, and the incidents in recent days cry out for a system-wide response.

Therefore I will be taking immediate steps to set that response in motion.

I intend to convene all 10 chancellors, either in person or by telephone, to engage in a full and unfettered discussion about how to ensure proportional law enforcement response to non-violent protest.

To that end, I will be asking the Chancellors to forward to me at once all relevant protocols and policies already in place on their individual campuses, as well as those that apply to the engagement of non-campus police agencies through mutual aid agreements.

Further, I already have taken steps to assemble experts and stake-holders to conduct a thorough, far-reaching and urgent assessment of campus police procedures involving use of force, including post-incident review processes.

My intention is not to micromanage our campus police forces. The sworn officers who serve on our campuses are professionals dedicated to the protection of the UC community.

Nor do I wish to micromanage the chancellors. They are the leaders of our campuses and they have my full trust and confidence.

Nonetheless, the recent incidents make clear the time has come to take strong action to recommit to the ideal of peaceful protest.

As I have said before, free speech is part of the DNA of this university, and non-violent protest has long been central to our history. It is a value we must protect with vigilance. I implore students who wish to demonstrate to do so in a peaceful and lawful fashion. I expect campus authorities to honor that right.

In meeting with chancellors, President Yudof outlines actions on several fronts

University of California President Mark G. Yudof convened the chancellors of all 10 campuses today (Monday, Nov. 21) and asserted that they must do everything possible to protect the rights of students, faculty and staff to peaceful protest.

He reiterated that he was appalled by the images of students being doused with pepper spray at UC Davis and jabbed with batons at UC Berkeley. “We cannot let this happen again,” he said.

During a teleconference, Yudof told the chancellors he had directed senior UCOP staff to move immediately on several fronts to:

* Examine recent incidents involving use of force on UC campuses.
* Organize a thorough examination of police procedures, protocols and training.
* Put in place a structure to assemble recommendations for longer-term practices to ensure the safety of members of the UC community engaged in peaceful protest.
While expressing his confidence in the leadership of UC chancellors, he said he was directing senior staff to work with all of the campus police chiefs to bring together policies governing use of force at each of the locations, as well as requirements for the presence of senior administrators and observers in certain situations.

Further details about plans for the systemwide reviews of specific incidents of use of force and current protocols are expected to be shared with the public this week.

He needs to define non-violent protest and what was the full context of the pepper spraying event (the bits and pieces I’ve seen were disturbing). According to the media tea party protests are violent...

Wouldn’t that interfere with pandering to his base?

If this is the way these people feel, then the police should just stay on the out skirts of the University to assure that the protestors don’t leave the campus. This way the protestors can do what they wish on the campus. When the school has to repair the damage, raise the tuition to pay for it.

Let the students police themselves like OWS did and why have classes....this is about protesting as a national strategy. So no pepper spray just street drugs, binge drinking and disruption of paid education services for our kids in State schools. Perhaps we could send them all to Mexico for an early holiday?

I was in college in the 60's...the era of the Free Speech crowd at Berkley, the SDS mess at Columbia..the take-over of the campus buildings...and trashing them..back then they were called "sit-ins" "teach-ins" and "live-ins"..surprised they haven't reapplied those terms to the OWS mobs..

I recall a few weeks ago, somebody blogged that OWS wants/needs a "Kent State like " moment..they're trying to raise this incident to that level...

Just get some spray bottles and spray them with soapy water. They’ll run off screaming. If somebody in CA wanted to have some real fun, join in with the protesters and drop a dead spotted owl in the middle of the sit in. Jump up and scream “My God! We’re in the middle of a nesting site!” Sit back and watch the fun.

A local caller to RUSH yesterday said the students were blocking a walkway and told they would have to move. They were given lots of options and time. Eventually the Police decided to use the most effective nonviolent tool they had pepper spray. I really feel sorry for the police.

I’m a parent of a Cal Berkeley student. Tuition has increased dramatically every year my daughter has been there (three), and there’s even talk of doubling it since the state is so far past broke. I have another one right behind her ready to enter the US system next year.

The vast majority of students are not participating in these things and some of the ‘protestors’ are outside agitators and agents provocateurs.

My daughter tells me most students want to be left alone to go to class and don’t want their paths blocked or the buildings locked when doing so (as has happened recently).

DD told me last year some type of protest wasn’t getting enough attention so the agitators decided to pull all the fire alarms on campus at the same time two hours into three hour finals. The kids taking the tests didn’t find it so funny when their finals were immediately declared null and void as everyone was forced outside the buildings

Cal students were furious, marched up to the little Commies and screamed in their faces to get off the campus, that they weren’t students and who in the **** did they think they were!

BTW: Largest student organization at Cal? Young Republicans.

Fire UC Berkeley Chancellor Birgneau: University of California police take direction from campus chancellors. Discrimination against Californians by University of California Berkeley Chancellor. Chancellor Robert J Birgeneau ($450,000 salary) displaces Californians qualified for public university education at Cal. for a $50,600 payment by a foreign student.

The need for transparency at UC Berkeley has never been so clear. UC Berkeley, # 70 Forbes ranking, is not increasing enrollment. Birgeneau accepts $50,600 foreign students at the EXPENSE of displaced qualified instate Californians (If amortization of fixed assets funded by Californians are included in foreign and out of state tuition calculations they would pay more than $100,000+ and would NOT subsidize instate tuition)

UC Regent Chairwoman Lansing and President Yudof both agree to discriminate against Californians for the admission of foreigners. Birgeneau, Yudof, Lansing need to answer to Californians.

Opinions make a difference; email UC Board of Regents marsha.kelman@ucop.edu

“I recall a few weeks ago, somebody blogged that OWS wants/needs a “Kent State like “ moment..they’re trying to raise this incident to that level”

Yes, you are exactly right. That is the goal of those who started “Occupy.” The hard Left did the same way back with the Haymarket riots. The goal is to get the police to act and kill someone, so they can yell “police brutality” in hopes of radicalizing people at a greater rate. Divide and conquer is their goal, so they will be the power brokers. They don’t care at all about the economy or poor people. Those who are camping out with them are naive “useful idiots” and are being used for a larger agenda that has nothing to do with the ostensibly reasons for “Occupy.”
