Newt had his chance, but he blew it: Why Gingrich won’t earn the 2012 GOP presidential nomination
NY Daily News ^ | 11-23-11 | SE Cupp

I was only 15 in 1994, when Newt Gingrich experienced his last great moment. (Well, before this one, where he’s surging in the polls, with his campaign having figured out how to run for President.) So I don’t really remember Newt’s glory days.

I have interviewed him on many occasions, however, as far back as 2006 and as recently as last month, and every time we talk, I’m struck by how smart he is. Despite that, I can’t get past the nagging voice in my head telling me that no matter how good he would be at running the country, he doesn’t deserve to.

Call me a square, but Newt’s past mistakes occupy both columns: character and politics. From his ugly romantic entanglements to his flirtation with environmentalism to his questionable relationship with Freddie Mac, bad decisions and lapses in judgment have been too frequent for a man of such obvious intelligence.

And yet, for all his mistakes, Newt remains startlingly unembarrassed, which makes those mistakes even less palatable. Though arrogance and a lack of shame characterize Capitol Hill, I’m suspicious of a guy who’s had so many public errors, and is so untroubled by them.

So what’s Newt going to do about the ones who have only been here 10 years or less? What are the details about that situation? He’d better come out and clarify it, or he’s lost my vote.

Have no fear MR and MB will deport them ALL. Did you hear how they plan on executing that? NOPE! Because they know it WILL NEVER HAPPEN - they only want you to think they will do it! They have no plan other than talk to amuse.

What part of “illegal” doesn’t Newt understand?

Let’s just change all the laws to show the rest of the world we have a heart!

“...they both do want a secure border to stop any future bleeding.”

No, they don’t. Both Perry and Gingrich exposed their true feelings on the issue by calling those who want to stop illegal immigration heartless and inhumane.

You are living in a reality of your own making that has nothing to do with the reality of what both Perry and Gingrich plainly and publicly have stated.

Wasn't it about 25 years ago when these folks, under Reagan, were able to get amnesty?

Once they become US Citizens they will be entitled to all the goodies given out by our Federal Government - and are we, the Taxpayers, willing to take on this additional burden?

If we can't round them up and send them back, let them live under the radar and support themselves on their own dime. They have been doing this for at least the last 50 years. Now let's secure the border...and frankly, I don't care if you do it with an electric fence, alligators, guards, pit bulls or drones. Keep illegals out of our Country!

Many here on FR would say Sarah is the UBER Conservative but ya know, she also said :

Univision: Governor, let me ask you about immigration. How many undocumented immigrants are there in Alaska?

Sarah Palin: I don’t know, I don’t know. That’s a good question.

Univision: As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?

Sarah Palin: There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant — there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants — not only economically is that just an impossibility but that’s not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

Univision: Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?

Sarah Palin: No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They’ve got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

Given a hypothetical that there is ONLY a choice between Newt and Romney - Newt gets my vote AND total support to stop the Socialism machine known as 0bama.

Sarah is being honest and so is Newt, Perry and Ron Paul. Not something we want to hear but, nonetheless, they are right. Does that mean he would do nothing - absolutely not. He’s already coming from an honest plan - one that is doable. He would get rid of the scum, the criminals and those ripping off the system AND seal the border - what Perry has been saying all along - that’s the first step. BTW, I am a Palin supporter - not ‘was’. I have no candidate now - that’s why I am unbiased and coming from common sense and not pie in the sky.

“No, she had no answer at all...that was my point...no answer at all.”

Sorry, I didn’t pick up on that.

The answer she should have given is that (i) deportation will principally be by self-deportation because employment laws will be enforced and no federal or state benefits will be paid to illegals, and forced-deportation will also be used for those who are caught breaking the law; and (ii) if deported forcibly because caught breaking the law, the family should be allowed to stay together and therefore the entire illegal family unit should be deported. And that her administration would not use the current misinterpretation of the 14th amendment that considers anchor babies U.S. citiizens just because their illegal mother dropped them on U.S. soil.

I forget. Did Cain weigh in on his stance on illegals or what his plan is?

Being an UBER conservative means coming from common sense, also, and speaking truth! What part of this There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant — there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants is not truth? Do you actually think it would/could ever happen? Do you think any governor knows exactly how many illegals are in their state? If one Governor said - there are 'x' amount, do you simply believe and say 'wow' - he's on top of things and not give one thought that he just threw out a general number to appear on top of it? Honesty always reigns, IMO.

>> We did it under President Eisenhower. Operation Wetback >>

uh, I hate to break it to you, but what was possible 60 years ago is not possible today. This problem is 60 years old, but a lot has changed in 60 years. 60 years ago I would not say it is impossible. In 2011, it is.

Hell, you couldn’t even call something operation wetback today. Let alone do it. Not saying that’s good, just saying THAT IS.

Well, you are exaggerating to try and make yourself feel superior - but that misses the point. I am not defending the positions they took about those already here. Again, I am not defending their position about those already here — again, I am not defending their statements either - BUT I am sorry - that is a DIFFERENT ISSUE than what to do about the border. It just is.

They agree with you on the border, but you are such a stubborn jackass that you reject it because they disagree with you on another issue. That’s foolish. No one agrees with you 100%, even yourself from year to year or decade to decade. Get a clue.

I do not support Newt for President but it's hilarious how most of the Cain supporters are broken hearted Palin backers.

D'uh! They're looking for someone OUTSIDE of Washington who's not another slick-talking phony politician who thinks he's smarter than you and has all the answers. Cain's not perfect, but his imperfections are mostly from being a non-politician.

Newt touched on what Reagan’s plan was and it was good but never followed. Secure the border first - then round up the criminals and stop any/all benefits to them. No admittance to any schools - report them if they show up. We have to start somewhere. However, I don’t like where they say seek out foreign engineers and allow them entry. I believe we have plenty here we can use - so screw seeking foreigners first - hire and educate our own.

“..that is a DIFFERENT ISSUE than what to do about the border. It just is.”

No. It just isn’t. What to do about people who are in the United States illegally, and whether or not to stop people from entering illegally, are part and parcel the same issue.

What a LOT of people right here fail to realize is Perry has implemented a task force of highly trained DPS and Texas Ranger commando units to work the Mexican border 24/7. I wish people could see these units in action. They have super sophisticated helicopters (numerous) armed with snipers and canine units. Texas taxpayers foot the bill for this operation (most of them, unaware of it) and these commandos interdict and seize tons of illegal drugs, arrest illegal aliens, and protect the US border with Mexico COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT of the US Border Patrol. Yes, they collaborate and work together, but these elite DPS officers have their own agenda and work independent of the Border Patrol.

While certain candidates stretch the truth and lie about their plans on border security and amnesty, Rick Perry actually implemented his own vision on the border and these brave warriors are protecting the United States while Perry gets attacked relentlessly and unfairly.

While what you say is likely the truth I would like to see the following:

Secure Border
E-verify enforced
$20,000 + fine for anyone hiring an illegal
Cut the bennies
Deport anyone who commits a felony.

If they don’t get the bennies and employers risk a heavy fine nd they c an’t get in there is only one way for the illegals to go and that is out of the country.

What was possible 60 years ago was electing a non politician. I think something similar to Oeration Wetback could be done today. Cut off all fed funds for unemployment, secure the border, call it Operation Trespasser. I do know nothing ever gets done that isn’t tried.
