Humane treatment for OWS protesters - a modest proposal
11/24/2011 | dirtboy

Occupy Wall Street has now dragged into its third month. What should be a matter of enforcing existing laws has turned into an intractable political problem.

But we should look to the federal government and its illustrious current and former leadership for inspiration on how to handle such situations. They have plenty of experience in not enforcing existing laws and then proposing ways to deal with that lack of enforcement.

It's just plain inhumane to tear down the OWS encampments in the bitter cold of November just because they are occupying public spaces and causing noise and sanitation problems. Some of those tents might have kids in them.

It's inhumane to load the OWS protesters into paddy wagons and take them downtown to jail. No one should be calling for such forced removal in this country, and the public will never support such.

No, what we need is visionary leadership for this problem. We need a sense of humanity!

But not for all OWS protestors, mind you! Lawbreakers should still go to jail! If you are caught selling drugs or murdering someone, you should still face the music of the legal system. Likewise, if you have just joined in the protests, you should be removed - only those who have been there for over a month should be allowed to stay! We should not encourage more encampments by allowing all to stay - only those who have put down roots in their local parks.

But imagine the benefits of such a humane approach - if conservatives come out in support of such a proposal, the GOP might win over those who are sympathetic to OWS's viewpoints. Plus, no more videos of pepper-sprayed protestors. Less police overtime. So what if those who live by the encampments have to deal with them? It's the price of tolerance.

I submit, if humanity is good enough for illegals, it's good enough for OWS. The solution to failure is never to correct the reason for the failure. It's the DC way.

A look inside OWS - a letter home from a protester....

“Hello Muddah, don’t you cry,

Here I am at Camp Oc-cu-py

Camp is very terrifying, It’s full of garbage there is no denying.

I share a tent with Joe Rice. His head is now, full of Lice.

You remember my pal Stew. He’s still trying to find a place to take a poo.

All the Anarchist hate Code Pink, complain about, the way they stink.
And my friend Larry Michaels, reads to us each night from a book called Rules for Radicals.

Now I know how scary this is, but my tent mate has Hep-a-titis.

You remember my friend Jerry. He’s bent over with a case of Dysentery.

Take me home, oh Muddah wont you, Take me home, I hate Occupy, Don’t leave me out here in the streets, where I might get arrested by a pig.”

Actually, making fun of anyone who tortures logic and reason beyond recognition in their attempts to shill for amnesty.

I say fence them in and let them kill each other—which they eventually would do.

Alternate that with the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. Maybe toss in a 24 hour session of Elvira from the Oak Ridge Boys. That ought to put them in the leaving mood.

“Lawbreakers should still go to jail!”

I agree. But then that would mean almost ALL OWS protesters would be taken to jail because almost all of them are camping on public lands where overnight camping is illegal.

I have a large collection of operatic recordings of which I could surely spare a few for the "entertainment" of the protestors. I would be sure to choose, of course, from singers who recorded 10 years or so after they should have retired.

Seriously, my heart goes out to the people who live and have businesses around these "sites". One of the legitimate functions of government is to maintain law and order but hard-working businessmen are seeing their livelihood damaged by government officials tolerating this illegal disruption of public order. And god help anyone who is trying to sell a property in the area - would you buy a condo near one of these zoos?

They have a right to free speech - they have no right to create a slum in public parks. They should be made to do exactly what is required for Tea Party assemblies - post bonds, get permits, assemble to voice your views then pick up your own trash and go home!
